Early Strike Puts Yale Past No. 23 Field Hockey, 1-0

Minutewomen put nine shots on goal in setback.
AMHERST, Mass. ā Yale's Olivia Levieux scored in the 14th minute, ultimately notching the match's only tally, as No. 23 ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to the Bulldogs by a 1-0 score on Sunday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.

The loss drops the Minutewomen to 11-7 on the season and Yale improves to 8-6.

Goalkeeper Emily Hazard made three saves on the day for UMass, countered with nine stops by Yale's Sydney Terroso.

Levieux buried the eventual game-winner after catching an in-circle pass from Carol Middough. Corralling the ball on her stick, Levieux snapped a turnaround shot that was initially knocked down by Hazard before the ball took a tough bounce and trickled into the cage.

A notable first half opportunity for UMass to respond came in the 22nd minute when Sarah Hawkshaw fed Emma Bressler, who dribbled along the baseline before her reverse-stick shot was denied by Terroso on a beautiful save.

In the final 10 minutes of regulation, Massachusetts drew three penalty corners and also replaced Hazard with a kicking back in Shauna Rankin-Byrne, but Terroso and Yale's circle defense made the appropriate adjustments to preserve the 1-0 result. Melanie Kreusch and Mirra Stillman ripped shots as the match entered the home stretch but neither would find the cage. In the 66th minute Georgie McTearĀ put a shot home that sent the Minutewomen and fans into celebration, but the goal was washed out.

The Maroon and White had the edge in total shots, 16-9, including on-target attempts (9-4), as well as a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Massachusetts wraps up the regular season on Fri., Oct. 27 hosting Richmond in a noon match at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
