Minutewomen host Yale Sunday afternoon for Senior Day.
AMHERST, Mass. – A second half flurry of goals by No. 19 Saint Joseph's were too much for No. 23 University of Massachusetts field hockey as the Minutewomen fell by a 5-2 score on Friday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
The setback drops UMass to 11-6 on the season and 5-2 against Atlantic 10 opponents and SJU is now 14-3 (6-1 A-10). It also snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Minutewomen on their home pitch dating back to Oct. 2, 2016.
Massachusetts opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity in the eighth minute. Inserted by Lucy Cooper and stopped by Sophie de Jonge, Melanie Kreusch sent a low shot that ended up narrowly inside the left post, earning her eighth goal of the season.
In a near carbon copy of that first strike, Kreusch doubled the UMass advantage in the 16th minute via a corner. This time, she ripped the ball toward the right side of the cage before a redirection by a Saint Joseph's defender sent it home for the 2-0 margin. Shauna Rankin-Byrne received the second assist.
After making adjustments at halftime Saint Joseph's came out firing in the second stanza. The Hawks recorded three tallies in a 10-minute span via Emily Peters and Anna Willocks (2) to take the lead before Quinn Maguire and Emily Peters added insurance in the final 10 minutes of the match.
The SJU defense stepped up to hold the Minutewomen to only two shots on goal in the second 35 minutes, with goalkeeper Victoria Kammerinke adjusting to knock down both on-target attempts. She finished with eight stops on the day.
Emily Hazard matched Kammerinke with eight saves of her own before being replaced with a kicking back in Rankin-Byrne in the 62nd minute. Sarah Hawkshaw lined an attempt on Kammerinke in that stretch, but UMass could not find the scoresheet. At the other end of the pitch, Jenna Garber picked up a defensive save.
The Minutewomen will aim to get back in the win column on Sun., Oct. 22 with a 1 p.m. Senior Day match against Yale. Fans are encouraged to arrive early at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex as UMass will recognize nine student-athletes and their families in a special pregame ceremony. In addition, the Minutewomen will also honor selected UMass faculty members at halftime of the match.
