Doubles, Singles Depth Leads Tennis to 5-2 Win at UConn

Minutewomen sweep doubles play, take four-of-six singles matches.
STORRS, Connecticut - Thanks to a sweep in doubles play and four wins in singles action, the UMass tennis team defeated Connecticut 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. The Minutewomen took an early 1-0 lead thanks to the doubles point and then won at No. 3-6 singles with the match point coming from Brittany Collins at the No. 5 position.
The win improves UMass to 1-0 on the season as last weekend's Brown Invitational was not scored as a team event. The Minutewomen will have the upcoming weekend off before heading to the Yale Invitational on Oct. 7-9 in New Haven, Conn.
In doubles play, the Minutewomen picked up 6-3 wins from the No. 1 pair of Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley along with the No. 2 duo of Ana Yrazusta and Jana Kovacevic. The No. 3 team of Ashley Avery and Brittany Collens closed out the sweep with a 6-1 victory.
UConn picked up singles wins at No. 1 play in straight sets and then a three-set decision in No. 2 singles.
Kovacevic and Woosley remained undefeated at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, with straight set victories.
Collins fell in her first set at No. 5 singles, but went on to win the second and third sets to clinch the match point.
Avery closed out the afternoon with a two-set win at No. 6 singles.
