AMHERST, Massachusetts – The 2016-17 campaign officially begins the Friday morning as the UMass tennis team heads to the Brown Invitational. The three-day invitational will see matches begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m.
Â
Along with UMass and Brown, the invitational will feature Rutgers and Stony Brook.
Â
This will be one of four events for the Minutewomen during the fall portion of the schedule. Next Wednesday, Sept. 28, UMass will head to UConn for its only dual match until January.
Â
The Minutewomen's roster features the bulk of the line-up from 2015-16 returning. Brittany Collins, Ruth Crawford, Laura Moreno, Anna Woosley and Ana Yrazusta all return after each saw significant time last season.
Â
Crawford led the team in singles victories last year with 18 including nine at the No. 1 position. Woosley posted a 15-9 record last season and is the active leader for career singles wins with 49 entering 2016-17.
Â
Crawford and Woosley will also be one of the top doubles teams returning after going 17-17 last year with the bulk of their play in the No. 2 spot. For the first time in two years, Yrazusta will be playing primarily with a new partner after the graduation of Carol Benito last spring.
