Minutewomen Claim Second at CCSU Meet

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - University of Massachusetts women's track and field program began their 2016 outdoor season Saturday at the Central Connecticut Invitational. The Minutewomen collected first-place finishes in six events to propel the team to second in a field of six schools with 157.50 points.

Colleen Sands, Meghan Patrolia, Kelsey Crawford and Bridget Deveau all earned the top spots in their respective events, while UMass' 4x400 meter relay `A' team took first, as well.

Crawford won two throws events on the day as Houston native claimed first in shot put with a 43-foot, 05.25-inch throw and collected 10 points for the team in javelin with the winning toss of 139 feet, 05 inches. Her performances in both events met the qualifying standards for the New England Championship.

Sands qualified for the New England Championship in 5,000 meter run as the sophomore claimed first place with a time of 17 minutes, 16.55-seconds.

Patrolia ran 15.15-seconds to gold in 100 meter hurdles, qualifying for New Englands, and Deveau claimed first in 400 meter hurdles with her 1-minute, 3.87-second finish.

UMass' 4x400 meter relay team of Deveau, Melissa Beaupre, Olivia Weir and Caroline Leung won the event with a time of 4:01.04.

Tatiyanna Sanders was the runner-up in the 100 meter dash, finishing at 13.16-seconds. Beaupre took third at 13.19-seconds. Olivia Ventra was eighth at 13.47-seconds and Mia Kamara rounded out the top-10 UMass finishers at 13.57-seconds.

Beaupre was fourth in 200 meter dash at 27.22-seconds and Kamara posted a time of 28.63-seconds, good for ninth.

Weir was fifth in 800 meter run at 2 minutes, 15.92-seconds and Carly Zinner claimed fourth in mile run with a time of 5 minutes, 10.32-seconds.

In 400 meter hurdles, Mary Lavery ran 1 minute, 6.28-seconds to take third. Leung also ran 1 minute, 6.28-seconds for fourth place.

In long jump, Sanders was the runner-up with a mark of 16 feet 9.75 inches. Charlotte Robison claimed fourth with a 16-foot, 4.25-inch leap. In triple jump, Meg Rhodes took seventh at 34 feet, 09.00 inches.

In shot put, Margaret Riseborough earned second with a New England-qualifying 40-foot, 08.75-inch throw. Alexa Fearing was eighth at 34 feet, 09.75 inches.

Riseborough also scored in discus, capturing fourth place at 120 feet, 2 inches. Fearing scored in her second event, as well, taking seventh with a 102-foot, 7-inch throw.

In javelin, Deveau took second at 133 feet, 02 inches. Robison was right behind, placing third at 132 feet, 8 inches . Lucy Belt was UMass' fourth scorer in the event, taking fifth at 120 feet, 2 inches.

Two more Minutewomen were in action at the Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday as Emilie Cowan and Heather MacLean raced in the 800 meter run. Cowan placed 46th with a time of 2 minutes, 14.41-seconds, while MacLean was unable to complete the race due to injury.

The Minutewomen are back in action next Sat. Apr. 9 for the Leap Year Tri-Meet at home at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
