Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - John Jennings had a home run and two RBI and Dylan Morris had a solo shot of his own, but Boston College combined for five runs over the first two innings as University of Massachusetts baseball fell to the Eagles, 11-5, Tuesday at Earl Lorden Field.

The win moves the Eagles to 14-9, while the setback puts the Minutemen at 5-11.

The Eagles struck for three runs in the first inning, beginning when Jake Palomaki came in to score on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Stephen Sauter sent a first-pitch offering over the fence in right field for a two-run homer to extend the BC lead to 3-0.

BC added two more in the second frame, highlighted by a leadoff home run by Michael Strem. The Eagles added their fifth run of the afternoon when Donovan Casey hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Johnny Adams.

UMass got on the board in the bottom of the second. Hunter Carey poked a base hit through the left side to begin the inning, then Cooper Mrowka doubled to left center, plating the sophomore and making the score 5-1. The Minutemen got to within two at 5-3 in the bottom of the third when Morris and Jennings each hit solo shots.

Jennings tallied his second RBI of the afternoon in the fifth, sending a base knock to left field, scoring Mike Hart to move the score to 6-4. UMass added its fifth and final run in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Carey grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought Morris home, narrowing the deficit to 8-4.

The Eagles sealed the victory in the top of the eighth after striking for three runs. Gian Martellini singled to score Joe Cronin. Four batters later, Strem sent a double to center, scoring Gabriel Hernandez and Jake Alu. That put the score at 11-5, which stood as the final margin.

Zach Stromberg (1-0) earned the win for BC after going four innings, allowing five hits and three runs while walking one and striking out two batters. The loss went to UMass’ Ryan Venditti (0-3), who lasted just 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits, walking two.

UMass begins a non-conference home-and-home series with Rhode Island on Saturday, April 2 at Earl Lorden Field. The contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
