Pipkins Wins Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - University of Massachusetts freshman guard Luwane Pipkins was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Monday, as announced by the league office. Pipkins had a team-best 19.0 points per game during Gotham Classic victories over North Carolina A&T, 65-59 and Kennesaw State, 95-77 that improved UMass to 8-3 on the season. The Chicago, Illinois, native also chipped in 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds per game with only two turnovers committed in 63 minutes on the floor.
Pipkins helped UMass overcome an 18-point first half deficit against NC A&T with 11 points on the game, including nine in the pivotal second half. He scored all nine of those second half points during the final eight minutes of the game, during which the Minutemen went in front for the first time on the day. Pipkins staked the team to the lead for good with a 3-pointer at the 4:27 mark and followed later with a pair of fastbreak layups that kept the lead at 6 into the final minutes of play as the Minutemen held onto the lead.
The freshman guard followed with a personal-best 27 points against Kennesaw State, including a program record-tying eight made 3-pointers. Pipkins guided Massachusetts to a 41-35 halftime lead with 12 first half points and three assists. He then poured in another 15 points in the second half as the Minutemen put away the Owls for the win.
La Salle's B.J. Johnson won the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Award. Pipkins is the second UMass rookie named an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, alongside DeJon Jarreau.
