Men's Soccer Commemorates 2016 Season at Team Banquet

December 15, 2016 | Men's Soccer

Josh Jess, Ty Goncalves, and Konrad Gorich all recognized with individual team awards.

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's soccer team held its annual team banquet to commemorate the 2016 season and honor several key individuals on the team. While recognizing the overall achievements of the program during the past season, head coach Fran O'Leary and his staff also handed out three team awards and recognized the four Minutemen who earned All-Atlantic 10 honors.

Senior centerback Josh Jess was named the Team MVP, while fellow senior midfielder Ty Goncalves was honored as the Clubman of the Year. Sophomore centerback Konrad Gorich was recognized as the Rookie of the Year.

The trio were also honored for their Atlantic 10 accolades as Jess earned second-team honors, Goncalves was a member of the all-academic team and Gorich was on the all-rookie team. Additionally, senior keeper Jorge Becerra was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team.

UMass finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 regular-season standings after being picked to place 10th in the preseason poll. In O'Leary's second-year as the program's head coach, the Minutemen posted a 4-2-2 record in league play to qualify for the A-10 Tournament for the second consecutive year - the first back-to-back postseason appearance for UMass since 2007-08.

Led defensively by Becerra and Jess, the UMass defense was the No. 1 unit in league matches having conceeded just four goals against Atlantic 10 foes. The group didn't allow a single goal at home in four league games going 3-0-1 at Rudd Field.

Becerra's seven overall shutouts this season are tied for the fourth-most in a single-season in program history.

Jess earned co-captain honors prior to the George Washington match and was a four-year starter for the defense. In addition to his defensive prowess, he tied as the team-leader in goals scored this season with four. He finished his career playing in 72 matches and over 5,100 minutes.

Gorich entered his first season with the Minutemen as a starter on the defense despite missing several matches due to injury. He started 13-of-14 matches played scoring a goal and adding an assist.

Goncalves had a banner year as a senior. The co-captain had a career-best four goals and five assists to lead the Minutemen offensively. Two of his goals stood as game-winners and he had a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over No. 2 seed Fordham just prior to the regular-season end.

Becerra's first team nod marked the first time a UMass player was selected to the first team since defender Matt Keys in 2014. It was also the first time a keeper had earned the honor since Zach Simmons did so in 2008. In his two years with the Minutemen, he played in 31 matches with a 1.39 goals-against-average and a 0.730 save percentage. He had nine career shutouts and a 10-15-4 record.
