Four Earn Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Yearly Honors
November 09, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Jorge Becerra, Josh Jess, Konrad Gorich and Ty Goncalves all earn postseason honors.
AMHERST, Mass. - After a strong showing in Atlantic 10 play, the UMass men's soccer team had four players earn postseason accolades as announced by the league on Wednesday - the most for a single season since having the same number in 2008. Goalkeeper Jorge Becerra earned All-Atlantic 10 First Team honors, while defender Josh Jess was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.
In addition to Becerra and Jess, defender Konrad Gorich was named to the All-Rookie Team and midfielder Ty Goncalves was named to the All-Academic Team.
Becerra's first team nod marked the first time a UMass player was selected to the first team since defender Matt Keys in 2014. It was also the first time a keeper had earned the honor since Zach Simmons did so in 2008. Gorich's selection to the All-Rookie Team was also the first time since Keys earned the distinction in 2011.
UMass finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 regular-season standings after being picked to place 10th in the preseason poll. Under second-year head coach Fran O'Leary, the Minutemen posted a 4-2-2 record in league play to qualify for the A-10 Tournament for the second consecutive year - the first back-to-back postseason appearance for UMass since 2007-08.
Led defensively by Becerra and Jess, the UMass defense was the No. 1 unit in league matches having conceeded just four goals against Atlantic 10 foes. The group didn't allow a single goal at home in four league games going 3-0-1 at Rudd Field.
Becerra's seven overall shutouts this season are tied for the fourth-most in a single-season in program history.
Jess earned co-captain honors prior to the George Washington match and has been a four-year starter for the defense. In addition to his defensive prowess, he tied as the team-leader in goals scored this season with four.
Gorich entered his first season with the Minutemen as a starter on the defense despite missing several matches due to injury.
Goncalves had a banner year as a senior. The co-captain had a career-best four goals and four assists to lead the Minutemen offensively. Two of his goals stood as game-winners and he had a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over No. 2 seed Fordham just prior to the regular-season end.
UMass will open the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday afternoon against No. 5 seed VCU. For complete tournament information, visit www.Atlantic10.com.
