Hazard makes five saves; Delario and Hawkshaw score in victory
RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Massachusetts field hockey goalkeeper Emily Hazard made five saves while Izzie Delario and Sarah Hawkshaw scored once each as the Minutewomen blanked VCU, 2-0 at Cary Street Field on Friday afternoon. The win improved UMass to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in league action while the outcome dropped VCU to 3-8 and 1-4.
The Massachusetts offense needed just 51 seconds to put a goal on the scoreboard. Hawkshaw fed a pass to Delario for the goal, Delario's seventh score of the season and 25th all-time as a Minutewoman.
After the defensive front limited VCU to just one off-target shot in the first half, Hazard's play in net preserved the advantage over the final 35 minutes. Hazard made back-to-back stops in the 40th minute and added three more over the following 10 minutes of game action before Hawkshaw doubled the UMass advantage.
Hawkshaw converted on an unassisted play in the 59th minute, her seventh tally of the season and the junior's 21st donning the Maroon and White.
Massachusetts led in shots, 16-8 and on-target attempts, 10-5. Corners were even at 4-4. Chelsea Kownurko finished with eight saves in net for VCU.
The Minutewomen finish their road trip to Virginia with a Sun., Oct. 9 tilt at Richmond (5-6, 3-2) at Noon. Follow the squad throughout the season via Twitter (@UMassFH), Instagram (umassfieldhockey) and Facebook (UMass Field Hockey).
