Field Hockey Slips By Northeastern On Late Conversion

October 16, 2016 | Field Hockey

Hocks provides end-of-game heroics with 68th minute goal

AMHERST, Massachusetts - University of Massachusetts field hockey won its second consecutive contest via late-game heroics when junior midfielder Celina Hocks sealed a 3-2 win over Northeastern with a 68th minute goal at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon. Hocks redirected a penalty corner play by Hannah Farrell into the left side of the cage netting for the game-winning tally, her third goal of the season.

Izzie Delario and Grace Horgan scored once apiece in the victory while Farrell collected a pair of assists as she also facilitated Horgan's conversion. The Minutewomen improve to 9-6 with the win while Northeastern drops to 7-8 overall.

Delario and Horgan boosted the Maroon and White to a two-goal lead before halftime with goals in the 21st and 26th minutes.

Delario earned her ninth of the season - tied for the team high - when she dribbled into the Northeastern circle and sent a shot into the right side of the cage beyond the reach of Huskies goalkeeper Becky Garner.

Horgan doubled the advantage only five minutes later. She fought through a host of Northeastern defenders in front of the goal to knock in a bouncing ball from Farrell at the goalmouth.

Northeastern responded with a pair of tallies to knot play at 2-2 entering the final minutes of regulation. Jamie Bartucca scored her first of the day at the 30-minute, 51-second mark of play before she earned her second in the 64th minute.

Massachusetts won the penalty corner battle, 6-1 and earned a 16-6 advantage in shots. Garner ended with nine saves, split between five in the first half and four in the second. Emily Hazard knocked aside one Northeastern shot on goal for the Minutewomen.

UMass takes to the road for two Philadelphia games next as the squad heads to Saint Joseph's on Fri., Oct. 21 before a contest at La Salle on Sun., Oct. 23.
