UMass-George Washington Scouting Report
George Washington and Massachusetts continue their long-running men's basketball series with a Tuesday, Jan. 12 contest at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. This edition marks the 68th meeting between the sides, a head-to-head series which dates back to Feb. 27, 1971 when UMass took a 70-65 victory from the Colonials at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
George Washington sports a 13-3 overall record and 2-1 mark in Atlantic 10 games currently. In their second game of the season, the Colonials upset No. 6 Virginia, 73-68 as part of a six game winning-streak to open the campaign. GW has been tripped up by Cincinnati, DePaul and Saint Louis for its three losses. They enter as winners in their previous contest as the Colonials dominated Duquesne, 91-64, to get back on track after a 65-62 defeat at Saint Louis.
In his first competitive season at GW, redshirt junior Tyler Cavanaugh, scores a team-best 16.6 points per game as the Wake Forest transfer hits 53.5 percent of his field goals (91-of-170), including 41.2 percent of his attempts from outside (21-for-51). He is also a consistent from the foul line with 63 made in 74 attempts (85.1 percent). Patricio Garino and Kevin Larsen follow Cavanaugh with 12.1 and 11.8 scores per appearance, respectively.
Last season, the Colonials used accuracy from beyond the 3-point line to down the Minutemen at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C., 87-65 as GW finished 14-for-18 on threes (77.8 percent), which included a 9-for-10 performance during the opening half when George Washington raced ahead, 50-28.

Clutch 3-Pointer Puts Davis Over 1,000 Career Points
Senior guard Trey Davis reached 1,000 career points during the 74-67 win at La Salle on Jan. 3. Needing 12 to reach 1,000 and with 11 already on the scoreboard into the final minute of the first half, Davis sank a shot clock-beating 3-pointer with three seconds left in the half to surpass quadruple digits in career scoring.
Davis is averaging a career-best 18.7 points per game (281 total) in 2015-16 after he put in 10.8 as a first-time starter one season ago (346). He averaged 9.2 scored per game as a sophomore (303) and 3.3 during his freshman campaign (105) in 2012-13. The East Dallas, Texas, native enters the game against George Washington with 1,035 to his name. He is currently 42nd all-time at UMass for points scored.
Roe To Fill Assistant Coach Role Temporarily
Assistant Director of Operations and former UMass men's basketball standout Lou Roe will temporarily serve as an assistant coach for the Minutemen under established NCAA guidelines and regulations during the absence of Andy Allison, who will miss an indefinite amount of time after suffering an Achilles injury at practice in late December.
As a student-athlete, Roe helped the Minutemen earn one of its greatest four-year records in program history from 1991-95 when the squad made four NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the 1992 Sweet Sixteen and 1995 Elite Eight. Roe went on to play in the NBA and overseas for nearly two decades before returning to Amherst in an administrative role before the 2012-13 season.
Berger's Big Second Half At La Salle
Redshirt sophomore forward Seth Berger guided UMass to its 74-67 victory at La Salle with a perfect shooting half in the final frame. Berger went 4-for-4 from the floor, including a make on his only 3-pointer, with a free throw for 10 points. The Seattle, Wash., native's 10 second half points sprung him to a single game career-high 15 points over the entire contest.
He added three rebounds, two assists, a steal and one block without a turnover during his 18 minutes on the court in the second. The 3-pointer, taken from the left wing, started a 6-0 run that turned a slim 62-60 lead into a 68-60 margin with four minutes to go that did not dip below five points the remainder of the way.
The Key Is To Get To 80 Points
UMass is undefeated this season when the Minutemen score at least 80 points in a game at 6-0. When the Maroon and White score fewer than 80 points the squad is 2-7 overall. The 80+ point games include Howard, (85-79), Central Arkansas (89-62), Clemson (82-65), Boston University (99-69), New Orleans (103-95 [OT]) and LIU Brooklyn (83-79). The lone wins when scoring fewer than 80 points came at Harvard, 69-63 on Nov. 17 and at La Salle, 74-67 on Jan. 3.
Bergantino Makes His First Start A Good One
After 95 appearances off of the bench, Tyler Bergantino made his career start as the center against St. Bonaventure. Bergantino finished with career highs in points (13), field goals made (6), field goals attempted (7), blocks (3) and minutes played (29). Bergantino also won the opening tip for the Minutemen and did not commit a turnover.
Hinds Headed For The 1,000 Point Mark Too
Including his two seasons played at West Virginia (2011-13), redshirt senior guard Jabarie Hinds is also nearing 1,000 points scored for his collegiate career. Hinds enters the game against George Washington with 951 and, through his current pace, will reach 1,000 at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 27.
Davis Finding His Way To The Foul Line
Trey Davis made 20 consecutive free throws spanning the games against New Orleans, Providence and LIU Brooklyn as part of a recent stretch of improved accuracy and added trips to the line. Davis' record for most consecutive made free throws is 33, earned during the 2014-15 season. Donta Bright holds the school record (40).
Davis ended his streak when he went 10-for-12 against LIU Brooklyn. Over the previous six contests, Davis is 39-of-45 at the line (86.7 percent), an average of 5.6 made in 7.5 attempted per game during the span. Prior to that, over the opening nine games of the season, Davis was 21-for-28 (75.0 percent) at the charity stripe (2.3 made per game in 3.1 attempted).
Highly-Touted Quartet Fills Out Latest Recruiting Class
University of Massachusetts men's basketball and head coach Derek Kellogg brought four new members to the program on Wed., Nov. 11, as Chris Baldwin, DeJon Jarreau, Brison Gresham and Unique McLean signed their National Letters of Intent to compete for the Maroon and White beginning in 2016-17. The quartet combined to earn a top-25 class ranking across the three major recruiting services as it earned 22nd in the nation from 247Sports and 25th from ESPN and Rivals.
In addition to the praise heaped on the individual student-athletes, Kellogg's signees represent the top ranked class across all Atlantic 10 programs according to ESPN, 247Sports and Rivals.
Baldwin, the No. 2 ranked player in Massachusetts and a four-star recruit via ESPN, hails from Springfield, Massachusetts, and currently attends Notre Dame Prep.
Gresham, who is teammates with Jarreau at McDonogh 35 High School in New Orleans, is the fifth-ranked player in the state of Louisiana according to 247Sports with an overall grade of 90.
ESPN also touts the abilities of Jarreau, who is a four-star player ranked No. 62 overall in their top-100 listing with more than 20 offers from NCAA Division I programs across the country.
McLean, who played locally at the MacDuffie School in Granby, chose the Minutemen over Rutgers and a trio of other Atlantic 10 institutions in Dayton, Fordham and Rhode Island.
Cady Lalanne Chosen In 2015 NBA Draft
UMass men's basketball senior center Cady Lalanne was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round with the 55th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Lalanne became the first Minuteman since Stephane Lasme (2007) to be chosen in the NBA Draft and 16th all-time from UMass. He was the only player picked from an Atlantic 10 Conference school.
Basketball Moves In To Champions Center
The University of Massachusetts men's and women's basketball program moved into their first dedicated team facility during the Summer 2015 with the introduction of the John Francis Kennedy Champions Center for UMass Basketball. The 53,000-square foot building offers a state-of-the-art facility for the Minutemen and Minutewomen that will benefit generations of basketball student-athletes to come.
The structure is named in honor of longtime athletics support John Francis Kennedy, who donated the lead gift of $11 million toward the project. The 53,000-square foot facility houses the daily operations for the UMass men's and women's basketball programs. The $22-million facility features dedicated practice courts for each team, office space for the coaching staffs, locker rooms and areas for strength and conditioning along with athletic training services. It also contains Legacy Hall, which will display the rich history of UMass basketball along the building's Eastern corridor.
The creation of the facility has several additional benefits for the University, the community and other programs within the athletics department. Current space utilized in the Mullins Center for basketball will be converted to additional support areas for athletics. The dedicated practice space for the basketball program will allow more open dates for the Mullins Center to schedule entertainment groups such as concerts, theatrical productions and other performers. The teams will no longer need to schedule practices in the Curry Hicks Cage as well, which will allow more time for other athletics programs and University-related organizations to use the space.
