AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Samuel Conway placed sixth overall, leading the Massachusetts men's cross country team in its season opener at the Minuteman Invitational on Saturday at the UMass Cross Country Course. In a field of six teams, the Minutemen took fourth with 90 points, while Connecticut won the meet with 53 points, Amherst claimed second (59) and Maine captured third (86).
Conway, who saw limited action as a freshman in 2014, posted the first scoring performance of his career, crossing the finish line in 19 minutes, 51 seconds as UMass' top performer in the field of 91 runners.
Senior Ben Groleau took 12th overall as UMass' No. 2 finisher with a time of 19 minutes, 57 seconds and junior Paolo Tavares also placed in the top-20, running the 6K race in 20 minutes, 6 seconds, for third on the team and 16th overall.
Freshman Michael Famiglietti came in fourth for UMass in his collegiate debut, 26th overall with a time of 20 minutes, 17 seconds, while senior Benjamin Thomas rounded out the Minutemen's scorers in 35th, posting a time of 20 minutes, 30 seconds.
UMass will now have 13 days to rest up and train for its next meet as the squad will head to the Coast-To-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday Sept. 25.
