CAMBRIDGE, Mass - The UMass men's track and field squad finished day one of the New England Championships Friday at MIT. The Minutemen competed against a tough field of the best talent the region has to offer. Among the notable UMass performances were John Chuma's in the pole vault and Kris Horn in long jump.

The bulk of Friday's top placings for the Maroon & White came from the field athletes. Chuma took 13th in pole vault with a 13 foot, 11.25 inch jump. Kris Horn was 18th in long jump at 20 feet, 11.75-inches. In javelin, Brendan Lloyd was 19th with a 156 foot, 9 inch throw.

Other Minutemen competed in the preliminary round of running events. Patrick Farnham ran 11.22-seconds in 100 meter dash, the time was short of finals. Zack Grube competed in 100 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.15-seconds but unable to move on to finals. In the 200 meter dash, Youssef Elkorchi ran 22.59-seconds, also short of finals. In the 400 meter prelims, Peter Farlow ran 54.57-seconds while Zack Grube ran 56.59-seconds, both short of finals.

The Minutemen pick up tomorrow for the final day of the New England Championships in Cambridge, Mass. Competition is slated to begin 12:00 p.m. at MIT.
