FREDERICK, Md. - UMass baseball alum, right-handed pitcher Dennis Torres has been promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox, Baltimore Orioles Single-A affiliate the Frederick Keys announced on Wednesday. The former Minuteman and 2013 UMass graduate is in his fourth season of professional baseball after being drafted by the Orioles in the 28th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

In 12 relief appearances for the Keys this season, Torres has gone 3-1 with one save and a 1.88 earned run average, allowing only five earned runs in 24 innings to go along with 11 walks and 16 strikeouts. Opponents were batting only .202 against him, the fourth-lowest mark for a Carolina League reliever. In eight May appearances he went 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA (15.1 IP/4 ER).

In 2014, Torres went a combined 3-5 with a 3.50 ERA between stops in Frederick and Low-A Delmarva and finished fifth among Orioles farmhands in saves (nine). With the Keys he went 2-2 with a 3.66 ERA after being called up right after the All-Star break.

In his final season with the Minutemen in 2012, Torres served as the No. 1 starter in the Minutemen's rotation and went 4-4 with a 3.34 ERA over 12 starts. He tossed a team-high 89 innings and was second on the team in strikeouts with 54, while walking 22. In his final start of the regular season, Torres threw his first complete game and struck out a career-high eight against George Washington. His 2012 single-season totals for games started and innings pitched currently rank eighth all-time in program history.

Over two seasons at UMass, Torres compiled a 6-8 record with a 4.60 ERA over 135 innings, a total of 24 appearances and 20 starts. He fanned 85 batters, while walking 43.
