Minutemen Distance Runners Compete At Sam Howell Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - The UMass men's track and field squad kicked off their 2015 outdoor season at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton on Friday. The Minutemen brought along several of their distance runners for the day-long competition in New Jersey against a slew of talented opponents. Highlights of the meet included Blake Croteau's fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meter run.
Croteau led the way for the Minutemen Friday evening as the sophomore placed fourth in the 10,000m with a blazing-fast finish of 31 minutes, 9.61-seconds. The performance was just shy of an IC4A qualifying time. Samuel Conway finished 14th in the event at 32 minutes, 35.98-seconds.
Paolo Tavares put out a stellar performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Tavares finished 11th with a time of 9 minutes, 23.67-seconds. The run qualified him for the New England Championship meet.
In the 5,000 meter run, Tyler Hagen and Jay McMahon finished within five seconds of each other. Hagen finished 34th at 15 minutes, 15.06-seconds. McMahon crossed the line 39th at 15 minutes, 20.30-seconds.
The Minutemen continue competition tomorrow at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Springfield, Mass. The meet begins at 10:00 a.m. Next week, UMass will host the Minuteman Invitational at the UMass Track & Field Complex. The competition will be one of two home meets scheduled for the Minutemen's short but competitive outdoor season.
