Minutemen Earn Second At Minuteman Invite

AMHERST, Mass - The Minutemen kicked off their first home meet of the season at Saturday's Minuteman Invitational. The meet boasted some of the most talented teams in the region including Northeastern, Central Connecticut and Boston College. After a day full of competition the UMass men's efforts earned a second-place finish behind Northeastern with 91 points. Highlights of the meet included Paolo Tavares' first place finish in the 5,000 meter run and Brett Davies' win in shot put.  John Burns took second place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Michael McNaughton took fourth in the 800 meter run. McNaughton ran 1 minute, 56.75-seconds. In the 400 meter hurdles, Zack Grube took fifth place at 56.37-seconds. Paolo Tavares earned first place in the 5,000 meter run. Tavares ran 15 minutes, 14.63-seconds to earn gold. Blake Croteau was fourth at 15 minutes, 28.61-seconds. Rounding out the UMass men finishes was Benjamin Groleau at 15 minutes, 34.82-seconds.

The Minutemen had success in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as well. John Burns finished second at 10 minutes, 5.61 seconds. Close behind came Jay McMahon at 10 minutes, 11.45-seconds.

Patrick Farnham was fourth in the 100 meter dash at 11.09-seconds, just shy of a New England qualifying time. Cotto Logan took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles at 16.11-seconds. Cory Adelson finished fifth in the 200 meter dash at 22.78-seconds. Nabbing 8th spot was Youssef Elkorchi at 22.88-seconds.

The men's 4x100 meter relay took third. Cory Adelson, Patrick Farnham, Peter Farlow, and Youssef Elkorchi together ran 43.40-seconds to bronze. Two of the men's 4x400 meter relays finished in top eight positions. The "A" team of Deion Arneaud, Peter Farlow, Zack Grube, and Logan Cotto together ran 3 minutes, 26.33-seconds to take third. The "B" team of Adam Bonfilio, Kris Horn, Nick Ingham, and Greg Copeland ran 3 minutes, 30.56-seconds to take seventh.

Nicholas Gemino took silver in pole vault at 13 feet, 5.25-inches. Right behind was John Chuma in third at 13 feet, 5.25-inches.

Brett Davies took the win in shot put, throwing 50 feet, 11.50-inches. Kris Horn finished sixth at 44 feet, 11.00-inches. Davis was also fifth in discus, throwing 130 feet, 1.00-inch.

Next up for the UMass men comes the Holy Cross Decathlon scheduled for this Wednesday in Worcester, Mass. Competition is expected to begin April 15 at 11:00 AM.
