Through his first nine games, Yanakopulos has a .355 batting average -- trailing teammate Kyle Adie by a single point for the team lead -- and has scored five runs and four RBI. - In the middle game of the Dayton series, Yanakopulos went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Yanakopulos has moved to third base after playing left field in all of 2014.
Adie Locked In - Kyle Adie leads the Minutemen with a .356 average through the team's first 11 games. The senior has six RBI to go along with six runs scored. - Adie has recorded four multi-hit games in 2015, with a four-hit performance against Dayton matching his career high. In the middle game of the VCU series, Adie went 3-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Bare Enjoying Success - After not playing during his freshman season, Matt Bare has made the most out of early opportunities in 2015. Bare has a .273 average through the team's first eight games, along with two doubles and three RBI.
Grant Receiving National Buzz - Senior captain Andrew Grant has been receiving a lot of notice early in 2015. The 6-4 right-handed starter was named the Atlantic 10's fourth-ranked prospect for the 2015 Draft in Baseball America's season preview. Grant was also named the conference's ninth-ranked prospect according to D1Baseball.com. - Though he was hooked for the loss, Grant had a solid first outing to his senior campaign, allowing just one earned run on four hits over seven innings of work with four walks and eight strikeouts last Saturday. - In his second start of the season, Grant struck out 10 Flyer batters in an eventual win over Dayton. Grant was pegged for the no-decision despite allowing just three earned runs over seven innings.
Mac Is Back - After missing all of 2014 due to injury and receiving a medical redshirt in 2014, second baseman/designated hitter Rob McLam returns to the Minutemen lineup. McLam batted .311 in 2013 and .337 in 2012, leading the team in both seasons. He was named an All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection in 2013. - The senior is hitting .313 for the Minutemen and has three multi-hit games in 2015. McLam leads UMass in RBI, driving in eight runs on the season and is second on the team with five walks.
Career Firsts - Sophomore Brett Maher logged his first career extra base hit with a double against Harvard on Mar. 17. - Freshman Brett Evangelista picked up his first career hit and drove in his first two runs of his career against the Crimson this past Wednesday. Freshman Hunter Carey (hit and RBI) and classmate Dylan Robinson (hit and two runs scored) also had career highs in the second game of a doubleheader vs. Harvard. - Sophomore Matt Bare, who saw his first collegiate action vs. Army on Mar. 14, logged his first two hits of his career and first run scored in game one vs. the Crimson on Mar. 17, going 2-for-3 with a double.
LeBlanc Picks up A10 Weekly Honors - Following his strong performance against the Flyers, senior captain Conor LeBlanc was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. LeBlanc threw eight shutout innings against Dayton, allowing just two hits while striking out seven.
Experienced Arms - The Minutemen bring one of the deepest pitching staffs in recent memory to the field in 2015 with nine of 11 hurlers who saw action last season returning this spring. Senior captains Conor LeBlanc (180) and Andrew Grant (142.1) have each logged over 140 innings in their careers, while redshirt junior Tim Cassidy is back for his third season after tossing 22.1 innings in his return from injury in 2014. Junior Brandon Walsh is also back in the starting rotation after starting four games last year, where he had a team-leading 3.02 ERA for UMass. - Mike Geannelis also has starting experience, though primarily saw action as a reliever as a rookie in 2014 and led the team in wins with a 4-3 recorded over 14 appearances.
Geannelis Looks To Build On Stellar Rookie Campaign - Last year's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Mike Geannelis, is returning in 2015 and looking to start the year as hot as he finished it. In his last 11 games, Geannelis had 18 hits, raising his average from .300 on April 13 to finishing the year at .347. Geannelis also led the team in wins, picking up 4 wins with a 4.85 ERA. The then-freshman struck out 16 hitters in 29.2 innings.
