BOSTON, Mass - At the end of the opening day of the New England Championship on Friday, the UMass men's track and field squad is ranked 12th out of a field of 20 teams in scoring. Northeastern leads the standings with 38 points, followed by Southern Connecticut State and Amherst. The Minutemen's distance medley relay highlighted the day's action, setting the No. 2 mark in program history with their 9 minute, 51.42-second performance.

The men's distance relay, consisting of Michael McNaughton, Peter Farlow, Stephen Ness, and Cory Thomas took home fourth place. Their time broke the old second place UMass program mark of 9 minutes, 52.2-seconds set in 1975.

Several Minutemen had strong showings in field competitions. In pole vault, Greg Copeland took 12th place with a 14 foot, 9-inch leap. Close behind, Nicholas Gemino snagged 14th with his 14 foot, 3.25-inch leap. Deion Arneaud claimed 15th in long jump, jumping 21 feet, 3.25-inches.

Zack Grube qualified for finals in the 60 meter hurdles. Grube finished 14th with a time of 8.55-seconds.

The final day of competition picks up tomorrow at Boston University at 10:00 a.m.
