After Day One Of New England Meet, Minutewomen In Third

BOSTON, Mass - At the close of the first day of the New England Championship, Friday, February 27, the UMass women's track and field team sits in third place in the team standings. The Minutewomen enter tomorrow's competition with only two points separating first and third. MIT is in the lead with 27 points followed by Sacred Heart at 26. Highlights for UMass from day one included Ashley Palmer's New England title in long jump and the distance medley's new UMass program record run.
Heather MacLean had a strong performance in the prelims for the 800 meter run. The sophomore took third, running 2 minutes, 13.27 seconds, qualifying her for finals the following day. MacLean returned to the track for the distance medley relay. MacLean, Courtney Neves, Carly Zinner and Rachel Hilliard ran strong for the silver medal, taking second place with a time of 11 minutes, 38.98-seconds, a new UMass program record.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Brittany Green and Meghan Patrolia qualified for the final race tomorrow. Green took ninth with a time of 9.07-seconds and Patrolia took 10th at 9.08-seconds.
The Minutewomen had enormous success in long jump. Ashley Palmer captured the title of New England Championship, earning first place with her 18 foot, 9-inch leap. Close behind, Courtney Kromko took fourth at 18 feet, 3.75-inches.
Tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 28, is the final day of the New England Championship. Competition kicks off at Boston University at 10:00 a.m.
