February 26, 2015 | Women's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio - Kim Pierre-Louis scored 17 points while Rashida Timbilla added a double-double on 10 points and 13 rebounds, but foul trouble limited UMass women's basketball in its 69-60 loss at Dayton Thursday evening.
Pierre-Louis also had seven rebounds while Kymber Hill ripped down six boards - five of which were off of the offensive glass. Emily Mital provided nine points as she went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and chipped in three assists with as many steals.
Andrea Hoover's 19 points led all scorers. Amber Deane notched 12 more for the Flyers while Ally Malott and Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova had 11 apiece.
Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Minutewomen fought back to within six points of the Flyers on four occasions, lastly at 58-52 with 8:05 to play.
Timbilla drained a jumper to knock the deficit down to six, but the Flyers responded with the next seven points scored over a span of nearly five minutes to stifle the comeback. Free throws buoyed the streak, as Dayton entered the double-bonus with more than eight minutes left in the game.
A balanced attack by UMass kept the Maroon and White within striking distance during the first as seven Minutewomen etched their names into the scoring column during the frame, led by Pierre-Louis' eight points. However, Dayton closed the frame on an 8-0 run, which turned a slim Flyers lead into a 40-30 margin at the break.
Pierre-Louis' final points of the opening stanza - a jumper with four minutes, 46 seconds to play - brought Massachusetts within 28-25. Hoover responded for Dayton with the next six points on a three-ball from the right side and traditional three-point play during the next possession. Tiffany Johnson added two foul line makes with 18 seconds left in the half for the 10-point Dayton advantage.
Cornelie-Sigmundova started the night 3-for-3 from the floor as the Flyers worked to a quick 9-4 lead less than three minutes into the game. However, the UMass defense forced Dayton into six consecutive misses and closed the gap with back-to-back jumpers from Hill and Pierre-Louis.
Dayton called timeout after Timbilla connected on a layup in transition to bring the Minutewomen within 12-10 at the 13:09 mark. Following the stoppage, the Flyers compiled a 10-2 run which increased the home side's lead to 22-12 only 2:07 later for their first double-digit lead of the evening.
The Minutewomen wrap up the regular season with Senior Day at the Mullins Center against Rhode Island on Sunday, March 1. Massachusetts will Mital, Pierre-Louis and Paula Tarnachowicz alongside team manager Mike Patterson prior to the game, which is set to tip off at 1 p.m.
