CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - AnnMarie Healy scored 18 points and Shilpa Tummala added 17 points as Harvard held on for a 67-65 win over the UMass basketball team on Wednesday night at Lavietes Pavilion. The Minutewomen had a final chance to win the game, but sophomore Cierra Dillard's three-point shot from the left wing just rimmed out as the final buzzer sounded.
The loss drops UMass to 1-1 overall as the Minutewomen host Buffalo on Saturday at 5 p.m. in their home opener at the Mullins Center. Harvard improves to 1-1 with the win.
Freshman Bria Stallworth led UMass with 19 points, while Kymber Hill had nine. Dillard, Leah McDerment, and Alyssa Lawrence each scored eight points. Rashida Timbilla had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Along with Tummala and Healy, the Crimson received double-figure scoring from Destiny Nunley who had 12 points, all in the second half, along with a team-high seven rebounds.
The game was a back-and-forth affair that featured 13 lead changes and nine ties throughout. Harvard held a 15-10 lead after the first quarter, but the Minutewomen rallied in the second taking a 29-27 lead into halftime.
In the second quarter, UMass led by as many as six, 25-19 at the 3:10 mark, thanks to a 12-to-1 run where the Minutewomen held Harvard to five missed shots and five turnovers in that stretch. Healy and Tummala teamed up for an 8-to-2 run at the end of the quarter to tie the game before Timbilla's fast break lay-up with 11 seconds to go provided UMass the two-point lead at the break.
The third quarter saw UMass hold onto a narrow lead for much of the way until Redford's lay-up with 35 seconds remaining put Harvard up 45-44. Victoria Stewart was able to convert a pair of free throws giving the Minutewomen the 46-45 lead going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was marked by nine lead changes and four ties. The Crimson managed to build a three-point lead midway through the quarter, but a three-pointer from Stallworth at the 2:52 mark tied the game at 60-60.
After Nunley put the Crimson back up by two following a Tummala steal, UMass responded with another Stallworth three-pointer taking a 63-62 lead with 1:44 to go.
Back-to-back buckets for Harvard gave the Crimson a 67-63 lead with 18 seconds remaining, but Dillard was able to convert a lay-up pulling UMass back within two. The Minutewomen fouled on the in-bounds play as Harvard missed both free throws at the other end of the court.
UMass quickly advanced the ball finding Dillard for an open three-pointer from the left wing, but her shot was just long hitting the back of the iron just before the buzzer expired.
For the game, UMass hit 26-of-57 shots (45.6%), but were just 4-of-14 from beyond the arc. Harvard was 25-of-61 from the floor and 6-of-20 from three-point range. Second chance points proved a difference maker for the Crimson as they had 21 compared to 15 for the Minutewomen.
