The Massachusetts-Saint Francis (Pa.) Scouting Report
The Minutewomen cap their road trip through Central and Western Pennsylvania with a Sunday, Oct. 11 contest at Saint Francis University in Loretto. Saint Francis sports a 5-5 overall record with losses to Davidson, 1-0 in overtime and VCU, 2-1 in double-OT, during the Red Flash's league action. Despite the 5-5 record, Saint Francis holds a 58-35 lead in points and 22-14 margin in goals over its opposition through 10 contests as the Red Flash outscore foes, 18-1 in victories with a negative gap of 13-4 in the losses.
Selena Adamshick's 18 points (eight goals, two assists) paces Saint Francis, followed by Irene Fritschy's 13 more (five goals, three assists). Samantha Zeiders played all 738 minutes, 50 seconds in cage during the 10 completed contests. Zeiders holds a 1.33 GAA and .763 save percentage with four shutouts.
UMass won a thrilling come-from-behind game, 3-2, last time these teams faced off, supported by three goals from then-freshman Melanie Kreusch. The Brussels, Belgium, native evened the game at one goal apiece at the 53-minute, 33-second mark and needed just over 10 minutes to push UMass in front, 2-1, via her second penalty corner score. Kreusch then used her final corner try for the 3-2 lead with one minute, 47 seconds remaining in play.
Points A-Plenty For Delario
After being limited to a pair of points on two assists during the first four games of the year, junior Izzie Delario exploded for 10 points during her most recent five of contests.
Delario had four points each in the wins over UMass Lowell and Saint Joseph's on one goal and a pair of assists while she added a two-assist game against Dartmouth. Each of those contests went as a victory for the Minutewomen. She missed action at Saint Louis and No. 9 Louisville due to injury but is slated to return later in the season.
Delario is the active leader in points and assists among Minutewomen with 55 and 27, respectively, in 45 career games played. She had 25 points (eight goals, nine assists) as a freshman before providing 18 more (four goals, 10 assists) as a sophomore. Delario's 12 points (two goals, eight assists) in nine games this campaign puts her on pace for 24 through the end of the regular season.
Minutewomen Take A-10 Opener From Saint Joseph's, 3-1
UMass opened its Atlantic 10 Conference slate with a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph's at the Gladchuck Sports Complex on Friday, Sept. 18. Izzie Delario's four points via a goal and two assists guided the attack while Sarah Hawkshaw and Melanie Kreusch also tallied once apiece in the win. Carlino made a pair of stops for the win while Kreusch added a defensive save, her second of the season.
Hawkshaw fired top-shelf in the 15th minute for her fifth goal of the season and the first of the contest before Kreusch doubled the score on a penalty corner at the 31-minute, 30-second mark. Kreusch's tally kept her even with Hawkshaw for the team lead in the category.
Taylor Leonhardt brought Saint Joseph's within one of tying at the 44:41 mark, but Delario iced the game with her 67th minute goal on a scramble at the cage.
Miller's Hat Trick Spurs UMass To 6-1 Drubbing Of Dartmouth
Junior forward Nicole Miller provided her first collegiate hat trick and Massachusetts field hockey put in its most goals scored in the last 35 games during a 6-1 victory over Dartmouth. Hannah Farrell, Sarah Hawkshaw and Kim Sistermans also converted on the offensive end in the win.
Miller put the team ahead only 80 seconds into the game before Sistermans converted with one minute, 15 seconds gone by. Miller followed with her second of the game on a redirection at the right post. After Dartmouth scored its lone goal, Hawkshaw, Farrell and Miller responded in order between the 51st and 65th minutes to turn the contest into a rout.
Minutewomen Retain Kennedy Cup For Third Straight Year
UMass field hockey defeated UMass Lowell, 4-3 to keep ahold of the Kennedy Cup for the third consecutive season. The annual meeting between the teams is dedicated to John F. Kennedy, a graduate and longtime support of both institutions.
UMass Lowell fought back and tied the game at three goals apiece after the Minutewomen pushed ahead, 3-1. However, Hawkshaw provided the game-winner on a hard strike from the right side of the circle in the 66th minute. Izzie Delario, Melanie Kreusch and Shauna Rankin-Byrne also scored in the win.
Miller's Extra-Time Goal Scores UMass 2-1 Win At Northeastern
University of Massachusetts field hockey junior forward Nicole Miller scored three minutes, 53 seconds into overtime as the Minutewomen secured a 2-1 victory at Northeastern's Dedham Field Thursday, Sept. 3. The goal was Miller's 10th with the Maroon and White and first on the season while Melanie Kreusch also scored in the win.
After NU forced the extra period with Kristin Abreu's game-tying goal at the 51:29 mark, Miller ended it in overtime with a shot from distance. Izzie Delario earned an assist for creating the play as she dribbled at Huskies goalie Becky Garner before pushing play back out to Miller at the last moment.
Garner tackled at Delario's feet in an attempt to knock the ball away, but Delario directed play back to Miller trailing near the top of the circle in time for Miller to set and shoot over Garner and Delario down on the pitch.
Minutewomen Earn First Win Of The Year At No. 20 Boston University
The Maroon and White propelled themselves to their first win of the season, 2-1, over No. 20 Boston University on the strength of first half goals by Melanie Kreusch and Nicole Kuerzi. Izzie Delario had one assist, the 20th of her career, while Sam Carlino earned the win in net with five saves.
Kuerzi deflected in a Delario shot at the goalmouth for her first collegiate goal, scored less than seven minutes into play against the Terriers. Kreusch followed at the 11:03 mark of play with a penalty stroke conversion to double the lead.
BU attempted a furious rally in the second half after Bea Baumberger scored on a penalty corner in the 63rd minute. However, the UMass defense kept pressure away from the goal while Carlino made one save down the stretch with two seconds remaining in play to seal the win.
Road Warriors
The Minutewomen closed a four-game season-opening road trip with a Sunday, Sept. 6 contest at No. 4 Syracuse. The four consecutive games away from campus mark a tie for the third-longest season-opening streak of play away from home for UMass in the history of the program. The 1996 team completed eight non-home games (four road, four neutral-site) before finally competing on-campus in a three-overtime, penalty stroke win over Northeastern, 2-1 on Oct. 2.
The 1990 team also spent the early part of its season away from UMass with six consecutive true road games ahead of the home-opening 1-0 win over Yale on Sept. 26. The 2015 team is tied with the 2011 squad in the category.
Three of the four contests were true road games, at Boston University, Northeastern and Syracuse. One, the first contest of the year, was a neutral-site meeting with New Hampshire at Boston University's New Balance Field.
Let's Play Some More
Two of UMass field hockey's opening three games of the season went into overtime as the Minutewomen lost to New Hampshire, 4-3 and defeated Northeastern, 2-1 after the end of regulation. With a third OT contest versus Richmond on Sept. 20, the Minutewomen have now played more extra time games in 2015 as the 2014 squad played over its entire 21-contest slate.
