MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Grizzlies announced the signing of University of Massachusetts men's basketball alumnus Sampson Carter (2009-14) to a professional contract Tuesday. Carter joins the Memphis organization after playing overseas in Europe and the Caribbean during the previous year.
Carter averaged 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in 135 contests for UMass, including 88 starts at forward from 2009-14. He provided his best season in 2013-14 when head coach Derek Kellogg's Minutemen earned a 24-9 overall record and appearance in the NCAA Tournament as Carter averaged 10.4 points and 4.8 boards per contest.
As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sampson is one of 20 players currently on the Memphis Grizzlies roster. He made his first NBA preseason appearance Tuesday evening after his deal was announced, when Carter had four points during 12 minutes in Memphis' 92-89 win over Houston.
