Vandenberg, Joseph to Serve as Honorary Captains on Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts faculty members Dr. Laura Vandenberg and Dr. D. Joseph Jerry will serve as honorary game captains and participate in the coin toss as UMass football hosts No. 19/20 Toledo, on Sat., Oct. 24, at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN3.
In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month and UMass football’s wearing of pink apparel on Saturday, UMass Athletics welcomes two esteemed members of the University faculty who work closely in breast cancer research to Gillette on Saturday.
Dr. Vandenberg is an assistant professor in public health and health sciences. Her work focuses on how low level exposures to environmental chemicals known as 'endocrine disruptors' can alter mammary gland development and contribute to breast cancer risk.
Dr. Jerry is a professor of veterinary and animal sciences and is the Science Director at the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute. He is Co-Director of the Rays of Hope Center for Breast Cancer Research with Dr. Grace Makari-Judson of Baystate Medical Center. His research is focused on identifying treatments that can heighten resistance to breast cancer. The laboratory also investigates how environmental and inherited factors can erode the natural mechanisms that prevent breast cancer and render it susceptible to cancer.
On Saturday at Gillette, Bob Picozzi and Matt Chatham will have the call for ESPN3. Josh Maurer, Matt Goldstein and Mike Antonellis will have the call on the UMass Sports Network on 105.5 FM WEEI (Springfield), 1200 AM WXKS (Boston), 830 AM WCRN (Worcester) and 95.9 FM WATD (South Shore).
Parking is free at both McGuirk and Gillette. Tailgating opens four hours prior to kick at McGuirk and three hours prior to kick at Gillette. Minutefan Way (McGuirk) and Minutefan Park (Gillette) offer fans and spectators the ultimate tailgating experience including the Minuteman Walk, dining options, inflatables, face painting, music and more.
For games at Gillette, with free wifi throughout the stadium and exclusive discounts at Patriot Place, tickets in the lower level seating area can be purchased for $25 while Putnam Club tickets are available for $50. The Friends & Family Pack includes four game tickets, a $20 in-stadium concessions voucher and exclusive discounts at Patriots Place for $80.
Group opportunities, available at both McGuirk and Gillette, include discounted ticket prices ($10 per ticket; minimum 10 tickets purchased), a welcome message on the video boards, on-field visits and exclusive discounts at Patriot Place.
