Rowing Gears Up for Head of the Charles

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass rowing will return to the most highly anticipated regatta of the fall season, the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, Massachusetts, on Sat., Oct. 17 and Sun., Oct. 18. 776 rowing clubs from across the country will compete in 61 races made up of more than 2,200 entries over the two days.

Last season, UMass earned a silver medal in the Club 8+ to earn the squad an automatic entry for the Club 8+ this fall. Haley Eovine, Haley York, Nicole Destefano, Katherine Armstrong, Zoe Hill, Aiste Balciunaite, Hadley Irvin, Natalie Boisvert and Courtney Edson comprised the medaling boat and finished with a time of 16:09.9.

In the second day of competition, the Minutewomen took home a pair of top-10 victories in the only two events the team participated in, including a fifth place spot in the Lightweight 4+. Krysten Menks, Emily Mann, Carly Zanatta and Allanah Rubi-Mooney represented the maroon and white, crossing the line at 19:37.43, a mere .09 seconds behind fourth-place finishers from Canada's Argonaut Rowing Club.

This season UMass will again compete in the Club 8+ and the Lightweight 4+, as well as the Champ 8+, the Champ 2x and the Club 1x. 26 different Minutewomen will make up the five-boat lineup.

Checking the Forecast

Saturday is predicted to be a clear day with highs in the mid-50s. Sunday will have mostly sunny skies in the morning but will become overcast in the afternoon with a high of 48 degree.

Looking Ahead Two weeks following the Head of the Charles, UMass will travel to Mercer, New Jersey for the Collegiate Small Boat Challenge over Halloween weekend on Sat., Oct. 30 and Sun., Oct. 31. The Minutewomen will then travel to Dartmouth, New Hampshire on Oct. 8 for the final regatta of the fall season: the Green Monster.
