Rowing Competes Back-to-Back for Successful Weekend

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass rowing competed in back-to-back regattas this weekend at Head of the Housatonic on Sat., Oct. 10 in Derby, Conn., followed by the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta on Sun., Oct. 11 in Hadley, Mass. The Seven Sisters marked the first and only home regatta for the Minutewomen this fall season.
Sam Kolovson kicked off the weekend placing second for the Minutewomen in the 1x Open in 19:47.1, just nine seconds behind UMass rowing alum Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul. In the 2x Open Allanah Rubi-Mooney and Krysten Menks teamed up to take the second place spot with a time of 18:30.9. Rubi-Mooney and Menks are intended to compete together in the Championship 2x for Head of the Charles on Oct. 17 and 18.
The most noteworthy race of the Housatonic came at 11:00 a.m. in the 8+ Collegiate where UMass beat Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island by 20 seconds. UMass crossed the line at 15:40.8, good for ninth, while Rhode Island finished in 16:27.8 for 15th.
At the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta the following day, UMass hosted Tufts and Ithaca in a series of small boat races. The day was a chance for the teams to practice sculling competitively in a variety of different boats and lineup combinations. The regatta kicked off at 10 a.m. with the 4x where UMass took home a first place victory over two boats from Tufts with a time of 19:11.9. Pippa Edwards, Natalie Boisvert and Caroline Garvey then teamed up in a unique 3x boat. The triple crossed the line at 18:21.3, two minutes before the 3x from Tufts. Then, in the 2x Zoe Hill and Alisha Weinstein collected first at 19:02.1 in a field of 13 boats.
UMass continued the winning tradition into the afternoon, recording the first and third spot in the 4x at 17:59.3 and 19:14.1, respectively. The maroon and white also collected second and third place finishes in the 2x thanks to pairs, Garvey and Hannah McCollough, and Estefi Marti Malvido and Hallie Dunlap. Junior, Edwards tallied the final win of the regatta in the 1x where the Mayland, Mass. native dominated the event with a time of 21:31.3.
UMass now turns its attention to the most highly anticipated regatta of the fall season, the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. on Sat., Oct. 17 and Sun., Oct. 18.
