Joe Donahue Indoor Games Provide Competition For Minutemen

ROXBURY, Mass - The UMass men's track and field squad took on the Joe Donahue Indoor Games on Friday that saw the Minutemen face off against tough regional competition including Northeastern, Brown and Vermont. Team efforts at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center produced an overall sixth place out of eight team finish with 54 points. Northeastern took home gold with 166 points.

Among the highlights for UMass at the meet were Ben Groleau's showing in the 1000 meter run, taking third place with a 2 minute, 35.06-second performance, and Greg Copeland, earning silver in pole vault with a 14 foot, 3.1 inch jump.

In sprint races, Patrick Farnham nabbed eighth spot in the 60 meter dash. The senior sprinted 7.14-seconds. Zack Grube had a good showing in the 60 meter hurdles. Grube completed the event in 8.71 seconds.

Alex Finestone's performance in the 500 meter dash earned him the 11th rank in the Atlantic 10. The senior took sixth place at the meet with a run of 1 minute, 7.14-seconds. Eric Gironda took seventh in the 800 meter run, running 2 minutes, 0.18-seconds.

Efforts in the relay competitions added to the success of the team. The 4x800 meter relay team finished in second place with their combined time of 8 minutes, 4.37-seconds. Comprising the team was Adam Selsman, Alex Finestone, Stephen Ness, and Michael McNaughton. Together the men posted the fourth ranked time in the Atlantic 10. UMass' 4x400 meter relay raced to a fifth place finish at 3 minutes, 32.24-seconds. Deion Arneaud, Adam Bonfilio, Zachary Blum, and Zack Grube together earned the sixth spot in the Atlantic 10 rankings.

In the field, in addtion to Copleland earning silver, Nicholas Gemino was next for the team, finishing sixth with a 14 foot, 3.1-inch jump.

The Minutemen have a week to rest up and train before their next competition. On Saturday, January 31, the Minutemen will take on the Terrier Invitational. Located in Boston, Mass., the event is slated to start at 9:00 AM.
