Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts men's soccer team jumped out to a two-goal lead but was unable to hang on, falling 3-2 in overtime to Harvard at Rudd Field on Friday.

UMass fell to 1-6 on the season and 1-1 at home, while Harvard won its fifth-consecutive game and will enter Ivy League play at 5-3.

The Crimson outshot the Minutemen 33-2 and played the majority of the second half in the UMass end of the field after a red card was issued to the home squad on a hard foul with 37:45 to play in regulation.

UMass got off to a strong start, scoring twice in the first 17 minutes to stake a 2-0 lead.

Josh Schwartz converted a penalty kick at the 12:33 mark after Luke Pavone was tripped in the penalty box. Just under four minutes later, Mark Morris found some open space about 30 yards from the goal and put a hard bending shot that curled into the upper left corner for the score.

Harvard scored the third goal of the contest when Jake Freeman was johnny-on-the-spot with a header into the goal after the initial shot by Nate Devine was saved by Ryan Buckingham, but not contained.

That's the way things stood going into the half as the Minutemen held a 2-1 edge.

Harvard scored the equalizer at the 52:24 mark on a free kick as Sam Brown's service was tipped and headed into the goal by Daniel Smith.

The Crimson made the most of their attacking play and combined that with the tired legs of the reduced Minutemen, scored the game-winner just 1:37 into the extra session. Andrew Chang sent a ball into the right side of the box from 40 yards out, where Hiroki Kobayashi headed the ball over Buckingham to give Harvard the victory.

Buckingham finished with a career-high 17 saves, including a half-dozen from pint-blank range inside the 18.

UMass will not have much time to recuperate as it will play host to New Hampshire (3-4-1) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
