AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to New Hampshire at Rudd Field Sunday.

It marked the third one-goal setback in the last five games for UMass (1-7).

The evenly-played contest saw each team take 11 shots but it was UNH's (4-4-1) eighth effort in the final minute of the first half that proved to be the difference.

Will Rasid took a long ball played into the right side of the 18-yard box, battled with a defender and sent a low cross into the middle of the goal area. That's where Duff Thompson got just enough on a one-timer to bounce the ball past Ryan Buckingham and into the net with 40 seconds in the period.

That score came 15 minutes after UMass' best chance of the opening stanza. Jake Alvaro got a run on a loose ball following a corner kick and shot a hard line drive from 20 yards that screamed just over the crossbar by an inch.

The Minutemen made a final push in the waning minutes, which included a header by Matt Keys from 10-yards out that sailed high and shot by Peter Alvarenga that was stopped on the goal line by UNH's Ryan Carpenter with 49 seconds left.

Alvarenga finished with a game-high five shots and put four on goal.

Buckingham made three stops on Sunday, two days after stopping a career-high 17 on Friday against Harvard.

UMass will be off until Saturday, Oct. 4 when it opens Atlantic 10 play against Saint Joseph's. Kickoff at Rudd Field is set for 1 p.m.
