BOSTON - The UMass women's cross country team traveled to Boston's Franklin Park on Friday, Sept. 26 to face off against a tough field of nationally and regionally-ranked competition at the Coast to Coast Battle in Beantown 5K. The field featured some of the strongest top ranking teams in the nation including Michigan, Georgetown, and Syracuse. The Minutewomen finished 19th out of 21 participating teams with 569 points. The number one nationally-ranked team, Michigan, took home the win with 55 points followed by Georgetown in second place with 77 points. Syracuse (134 points), Boston College (192 points), and Dartmouth (207 points) rounded out the top-five places.
Rachel Hilliard had another strong performance and led the Minutewomen across the line for a second week in a row, finishing 56th out of the crowd of 205 runners with a time of 18:07. Freshman Anna Capps finished in the top-five for the UMass women for the first time after making her collegiate debut at the Minuteman Invitational. She crossed the line in 19:26 to finish 168th overall. Sophomore Christine Davis and junior Carly Zinner finished side-by-side (175th and 176th respectively), each with a time of 19:33. Deirdre Martyn took the fifth spot for the Minutewomen, finishing in 19:38 to take 181st.
The women will have a week to rest and prepare until Paul Short Invitational scheduled for Saturday, October 4. The invitational will be held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Start time is at 11:45 a.m.
