CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The UMass baseball team took an early 6-2 lead with a five-run third inning, but Boston College scored five unanswered to slip past the Minutemen, 7-6, at Pellagrini Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. Following the loss, UMass falls to 3-17, while the Eagles improve to 9-18.

The Minutemen scored the first run of the game in the top of the second. Senior Nik Campero drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a one-out RBI single through the right side by senior Nick Sanford.

Boston College responded with two runs in the bottom half, though, to take a 2-1 lead. Chris Shaw walked and Joe Cronin singled through the left side to begin the Eagles' turn at bat and were sacrificed over to second and third with a bunt from Tom Bourdon. With two away, Stephen Sauter sent a double down the left field line that plated the pair.

UMass then climbed back on top with five runs on three hits in the third. Redshirt junior Kyle Adie lofted a double to right to open up the inning and, following a sacrifice bunt and a walk to freshman Mike Geannelis, senior Dylan Begin drove in Adie with the squad's second double of the frame. After sophomore Brandon Walsh reached on an error with two outs, redshirt junior Adam Picard sent a three-run blast over the fence in left for his second home run of the season.

However BC began to chip away. Gabriel Hernandez legged out an infield single, stole second and went to third on a ground ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Shaw in the bottom of the third. In the fourth, Johnny Adams doubled in Bourdon to close the gap to 6-4.

The Eagles then tied the score with a two-run fifth. John Hennessy and Blake Butera reached with a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively and came around to score on an RBI single by Shaw and a sacrifice fly by Bourdon.

Boston College took advantage of a UMass error in the bottom of the sixth to push across what would prove to be the winning run without a hit. Michael Strem drew a leadoff walk and later crossed the plate on an errant throw to third.

Senior DJ Jauss pitched two hitless innings out of the bullpen for UMass and took the loss (1-1) after letting up one unearned run with three walks and one strikeout. Bobby Skogsbergh collected the win (3-0) for the Eagles as he worked three innings of relief and limited the Minutemen to one hit, while striking out four. John Nicklas retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save (2).

Begin and Picard combined for four of UMass' six hits in the contest, both going 2-for-4 at the plate and contributed four of the squad's five RBI on the afternoon. Adams was the lone BC player to register multiple hits (2-for-4), while Shaw and Sauter drove in two runs apiece.

UMass will be back in action this Friday, April 4, when the squad will face Atlantic 10 foe Dayton in the first game of a three-game series at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
