December 11, 2014 | Baseball
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball head coach Mike Stone has announced the program has signed infielders Connor Columbus and Cooper Mrowka to National Letters of Intent. Columbus, a 5-10, 195-pound third baseman from Braintree High School in Braintree, Mass., and Mrowka, a 6-3, 200-pound shortstop from Cheshire High School in Cheshire, Conn., will both join the Minutemen as members of the Class of 2019.
"We are very excited to add both Cooper and Connor to our ball club," said Stone. "We think that both players will be able to make a positive impact very early in their careers at UMass. They are fine young men and will fit in very well as freshmen right from the start. We are looking forward to seeing their contributions on the field for the next four years."
Columbus, an All-USA Massachusetts Baseball First team honoree and ESPN Boston All-State selection in 2014, led the Bay State Conference with a .398 (33-for-83) average last spring as a junior with four home runs, 26 RBI, 31 runs and an on base percentage of .557. In the Division 1A tournament, he batted .315 with two homers and eight RBI to lead the Wamps to the championship game.
Mrowka, who is entering his senior season as a co-captain for Cheshire in 2015, hit .284 (19-for-67) last spring as a junior over 22 games with 13 RBI, nine runs scored, two doubles and one triple.
