BURLINGTON, Vt. - Early goals in the first and second periods helped lift #13/12 Vermont past UMass hockey, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 3-8-0 overall and 1-7-0 in Hockey East, while the Catamounts improve to 9-3-1 on the year and 7-3-1 in league action.

Freshman Dennis Kravchenko scored UMass' lone goal of the night, his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Sophomores Ray Pigozzi and Marc Hetnik both picked up assists on the tally. Pigozzi's marked his seventh helper of the year as he is now tied for the team lead in points (10). Hetnik's assist is his fourth point in the past four games.

Vermont opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the first period as Colin Markison put home a rebound off a shot by Mario Puskarich. Nick Luukko earned an assist on the play, as well.

The Catamounts pushed their lead to 2-0 early in the second as Dan Senkbeil fed Jarrid Privitera's partial breakaway that he tucked into the UMass net at the 3:26 mark.

UVM added its third of the night on the power play 9:46 into the frame. Mike Stenerson and Alexx Privitera set up Mike Paliotta's shot from the right point that found its way through traffic.

In the final minute of the third period, the Minutemen broke up the shutout bid. With the extra skater on, Pigozzi and Hetnik connected with Kravchenko, who beat Catamounts' goaltender Brody Hoffman one-on-one from the slot at the 19:29 mark.

The teams finished the night level in shots at 28 apiece with Hoffman stopping 27 shots for UVM and freshman Henry Dill totaling 25 saves for UMass. The Minutemen were 0-for-4 on the power play in the contest, while the Catamounts went 1-for-2. UMass won 29 of 53 faceoffs on the evening (54.7%), led by 11-for-18 efforts (61.1%) from Kravchenko and sophomore Steven Iacobellis.

The Minutemen will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 28, when the squad will begin a home-and-home with #14 Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
