Tennis Finishes 2014 Fall Season At The Big Green Invite

HANOVER, N.H. - The UMass tennis team finished its 2014 fall season with strong efforts at the Big Green Invitational over the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 2. Dartmouth College hosted the tournament at the Alexis Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, New Hampshire where the Minutewomen competed against Boston University, Minnesota and host Dartmouth in the three-day tournament.
Doubles pairs of Carol Benito and Ana Yrazusta Acosta, and Anna Woosley and Chanel Glasper went undefeated in No. 1 and 3 doubles, respectively. Benito and Acosta were the champions of the doubles tournament and the team went 7-3 in doubles overall. Glasper also went undefeated in singles at 3-0 over the weekend and Griffin posted a 2-0 singles record as well with a pair of come-from-behind wins.
The Minutewomen opened the weekend against Dartmouth on Friday. UMass' pairs of Benito and Acosta, and Glasper and Woosley clinched doubles victories to scores of 8-5, and 8-2, respectively. Aarzoo Malik and Arielle Griffin also competed in the No. 2 spot where the tandem fell 3-8 to Mathis and Schroeder.
UMass continued the battle against Dartmouth in singles play where the Big Green swept the Minutewomen in all matches. Acosta competed in No. 1 singles while Malik and Woosley represented the maroon and white in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Glasper finished the day with a 6-0, 6-3 No. 6 win over Minnesota's Alex Bergman.
UMass entered the second day of competition facing off against Boston University. Benito and Acosta recorded an 8-4 doubles win, while Glasper and Woosley contributed an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 spot. Brittany Collens and Julia Larson rounded out the winning in No. 4 doubles with a score of 8-4. UMass' winning style continued into singles play where the team took home four of five matches faced against BU including come-from-behind wins from Griffin and Collens.
On the last day of competition, the Minutewomen faced Minnesota and tallied two doubles wins. Benito and Acosta again clinched the No. 1 doubles match to a score of 8-4, while the pair of Woosley and Glasper stayed undefeated for the third straight day at 8-5. In singles, UMass won four matches in the No. 1, 2, 5 and 7 spots thanks to Acosta, Malik, Griffin and Glasper. Freshman Acosta won in No. 1 singles with a score of 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 over Minnesota's #1 player.
The tournament proved to be a solid weekend for the Minutewomen to close their fall season. UMass tennis will be back in action on Jan. 30, 2015 to face Brown in Providence, Rhode Island.
