Two Events Set for UMass Rowing This Weekend

AMHERST, Mass. - After a successful first weekend at the Head of the Oklahoma, which saw the University of Massachusetts rowing team pick up five first-place wins, the Minutewomen return to New England to compete in the 20th-annual Head of the Housatonic in Derby, Connecticut, on Saturday before they partake in the Seven Sisters Sculling Race on Sunday.
At last year's Head of the Housatonic event, UMass' Claudia Caballero Larco took first in the 1x Open Women with a time of 19:37.6, finishing more than eight tenths of a second faster than the next boat. In the same event, UMass finished third, fourth, and sixth. UMass also placed third in the Novice 8+ with a time of 17:30.8, second and third in the Open 4+ with times of 18:23.0 and 18:43.3 and second in the Veteran Men's 1x with a time of 18:55.7.
On Sunday, the Minutewomen look to continue the success they have had in the Seven Sisters Sculling Race in past years. In last year's event, the Minutewomen took first place in the 1x, 2x and 4x events as well as taking the top six spots in the double, with Taryn Wilson and Emily Mann leading the charge in that event with a time of 20:30.2, followed by Marika Kopp and St. Pierre at 22:24.3. Sam Kolovson and Rebecca Adams added a third place finish for the Minutewomen at 22:49.6.

Checking the Forecast
For Saturday's race at the Head of the Housatonic, the weather calls for rain showers (60% chance) in the morning with clouds to remain throughout the afternoon. The temperature will reach of 61 degrees and winds are expected to top out at ten miles per hour. When the Minutewomen return home on Sunday, the weather is expected to have mostly sunny skies with a high around 60 degrees. Winds aren't expected to exceed five miles per hour.
Freshman Takes Co-Athlete of the Week
Rowing freshman Carly Zanatta was named UMass Dinn Brothers Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 6. In her first collegiate rowing competition, Zanatta won four gold medals at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta on Oct. 4-5. In the first day of competition, she took first place in the Women;s Open Lightweight 1x with a time of 17:38 and the Women's Open Lightweight 2x alongside teammate Emily Mann in a time of 16:32. In Sunday's competition, Zanatta finished first in both the Women's Collegiate 1x with a time of 17:38.39 and the Women's Open 4x alongside teammates Mann, Krysten Menks and Sam Kolovson in a time of 15:22.77.
UMass Starts Fall Campaign With Success at Head of the Oklahoma
The University of Massachusetts rowing program opened its 2014-15 competitive season with a trio of first place finishes during day one at the Head of the Oklahoma, hosted in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Saturday. Newcomer Carly Zanatta took the top spot in the Women's Open Lightweight 1x before she teamed with sophomore Emily Mann to secure first in the Women's Opening Lightweight 2x.
UMass head coach Jim Dietz also entered into one race, the Men's Masters 1x E-J, and took first with an adjusted time of 14:58.
Zanatta and Mann capped their day with a second place finish in the Women's Open 2x 500m race with a time of 1:59 while another UMass duo, Krysten Menks and Sam Kolovson, finished in fourth only one second behind.
Menks and Kolovson entered in the Women's Open 1x as Zanatta and Mann completed the lightweight 1x. Menks secured fifth in 18:26 followed closely by Kolovson in six ith a time of 18:29. Menks and Kolovson also finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Women's Open 1x 500m event. Menks crossed at the 2:07 mark and Kolovson reached the finish line four seconds later.
Mann challenged Zanatta in the Women's Open Lightweight 1x and finished second in 18 minutes even while Menks and Kolovson participated in the Women's Open 2x and secured fourth in 16:50.
On Sunday, the University of Massachusetts rowing program concluded participation in the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta with a pair of gold medals during day two of competition. Carly Zanatta took first in the Collegiate 1x before she combined with Sam Kolovson, Emily Mann and Krysten Menks to pull in the gold during the Open 4x.
All four Minutewomen present for the Head of the Oklahoma participated in the Women's Collegiate 1x. Zanatta crossed first in 17:58.39 before a competitor from Oklahoma City University finished in 18:00.23. Emily Mann added a bronze in the Collegiate 1x with a time of 18:02.38 as she outpaced Menks, who took fourth in 18:07.43. Kolovson rounded out the quartet with a seventh place finish (19:07.02).
Kolovson, Mann, Menks and Zanatta teamed up to secure a 15:22.77 finish in the Women's Open 4x and finished ahead of Oklahoma City University by nearly four seconds.
The 2014-15 Minutewomen
The 2014-2015 Massachusetts Minutewomen rowing roster consists of four seniors, 12 juniors, 19 sophomores, and eight freshmen. They return 34 members from the 2013-2014 roster. Among the team's new members, there were five who competed at the 2014 USRowing Youth National Championships, hosted on Lake Natoma outside of Folsom, Calif., from Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15. Newcomers Katherine Armstrong, Lauren Azuela, Charlotte Bleiler, Grace Bundy and Stephanie Giovenelli all placed fifth or higher in their respective finals. The Minutewomen are coached by Jim Dietz, who is in his 21st season at the helm of the program.
