2014 Head of the Oklahoma Race Results
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Rowing Team will kick off their Fall 2014 season as they compete in the Head of the Oklahoma this weekend. Preliminary heats will take place on Saturday while the finals will take place on Sunday.
This weekend's races will be the third straight year that UMass has rowed in the event, and the squad looks to build upon its success last year, in which the pair of Emily Mann and Taryn Wilson took home gold medals in the Women's Open Lightweight 2x, as they finished almost 17 seconds ahead of the second place boat from Tulsa. Additionally, the team of Mann, Wilson, Claudia Caballero Larco and Lauren St. Pierre won the Women's Open 4x, finishing in a time of 15:28.16, 22 seconds ahead of the next boat. Finally, the accolades for UMass at last year's event were finished with Caballero Larco and St. Pierre earning silver medal in the Women's Open 2x with a time of 17:22.10
This weekends Head of the Oklahoma marks the first race that the Minutewomen have participated in since placing 21st at the NCAA Championships this past May, a feat they had not achieved since their last appearance in 1998. Last spring also saw the Minutewomen achieve victory, winning the Atlantic 10 Championships with a score of 52 points and barely beat the two-time defensing A10 Champion Rhode Island, who had finished in second place with 50 points. It was the 14th Atlantic 10 Championship for UMass in the programs history.
UMass will be sending four to compete in the Head of the Oklahoma. They include sophomore Emily Mann, who was victorious in the same race last year, as well juniors Krysten Menks and Sam Kolovson. They are joined by freshman Carly Zanatta, who will be making her collegiate debut this weekend.
