Two Events This Weekend To Close Out Fall Season

UMass returns to the Green Monster Regatta, hosted by Dartmouth College, for the fourth straight year. In 2013, UMass sent three boats to participate in the Novice 8+ race with the top Massachusetts boat finishing in fourth place with a time of 16:42. The Massachusetts B boat finished 11th overall with a time of 18:23 while the C boat took 13th place with a time of 19:39.
On Sunday, Nov. 2, UMass will compete at the Collegiate Small Boat Challenge. Last season, UMass sent 12 boats to participate in the event and took first place in the 2x B and 2x E Final events. Last year, Taryn Wilson and Emily Mann took first in the 2x B Final with a time of 7:58.70 while Krysten Menks and Nicole Destefano led all racers in the 2x E Final, crossing with a time of 8:17.28. At 2013’s event, UMass also earned a silver medal in the Collegiate 1x D and a bronze medal in the Collegiate 2-D Final. The Collegiate Small Boat Challenge is hosted by the Princeton National Rowing Association.

Saturday’s forecast for the Green Monster Regatta is expected to have a few rain showers with a high temperature of 46 degrees. The wind on the Connecticut River is forecasted at 10 miles per hour. Sunday’s forecast for Mercer, New Jersey calls for a 60 percent chance of rain with the high temperature reaching the mid 50’s. The winds will be fairly strong at 17 miles per hour. Next on the Schedule With this weekend’s events wrapping up the fall season, the Minutewomen will not return to action until March 21, 2015, when they begin their spring season in head-to-head competition against Coast Guard in Hadley, Massachusetts.
Freshman Takes Co-Athlete of the Week:
Rowing freshman Carly Zanatta was named UMass Dinn Brothers Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 6. In her first collegiate rowing competition, Zanatta won four gold medals at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta on Oct. 4-5. In the first day of competition, she took first place in the Women's Open Lightweight 1x with a time of 17:38 and the Women's Open Lightweight 2x alongside teammate Emily Mann in a time of 16:32. In Sunday's competition, Zanatta finished first in both the Women's Collegiate 1x with a time of 17:38.39 and the Women's Open 4x alongside teammates Mann, Krysten Menks and Sam Kolovson in a time of 15:22.77.
UMass Picks up Nine First Place Medals at Head of the Fish Regatta
On Saturday, Oct. 25, the Minutewomen traveled to Saratoga Springs, New York where they earned 13 overall medals, nine of which were gold. UMass took first place in the Colleigate 2x, Open 2-, Collegiate 8+, JV 8+, Novice 4+, Collegiate 4x, Novice 8+, Collegiate 4+ and the Open Lightweight 8+. In the Women's Collegiate 2x, the duo of Krysten Menks and Emily Mann took home first place honors with a time of 13:07.56, nearly three seconds ahead of the race's second place finisher from Ithaca College.
The UMass pair of Leanne Ondreicka and Alisha Weinstein also finished with a time of 15:50.78. The Women's Open 2- featured two boats from Massachusetts, and the pairs finished first and second in the race. The first place pair of Hallie Dunlap and Allanah Rubi-Mooney finished with a time of 14:22.88 while Maggie Curran and Annecy Smith crossed 12 seconds later with a time of 14:34.95. Other first place finishes included the team of Mann, Carly Zanatta, Sam Kolovson, and Menks in the Collegiate 4x with a 12:57.34 time while Kelsey Anderson, Katherine Armstrong, Annecy Smith, Aiste Balciunaite, Zoe Hill, Charlotte Bleiler, Grace Bundy, Lauren Azuela and Olivia Zelvis made up the Women’s Novice 8+ and finished with a time of 12:54.81.
UMass Club 8+ Takes Silver at Head of the Charles:
The Minutewomen traveled to Boston on the weekend of Oct. 18 and 19 to participate in the world's largest two-day rowing event, which saw more than 11,000 racers cross the finish line in its two days. On Saturday, Oct. 18, the Club 8+ team captured a silver medal, finishing only behind Brown in the event with a time of 16:52.23. Haley Eovine, Haley York, Nicole Destefano, Katherine Armstrong, Zoe Hill, Aiste Balciunaite, Hadley Irvin, Natalie Boisvert, and Courtney Edson comprised the Club 8+ for UMass. In Saturday's races, head coach Jim Dietz took ninth in the Men's Veteran Singles I with a time of 20:18.68 while Marika Kopp took 21st place in the Women's Championship 1x. She earned a time of 22:40.62 Day two of the Head of the Charles Regatta featured two events that the Minutewomen raced in. Senior Rachel Boudreau represented UMass in the Women's Club 1x as she finished in 10th place with a time of 23:25.39, more than 25 seconds ahead of the boat from the SoCal Scullers. Heather Pekarovich, Krysten Menks, Emily Mann, Carly Zanatta, and Allanah Rubi-Mooney capped the strong performance at the Head of the Charles with fifth in the 4+. The Minutewomen quintet finished with a time of 19:37.43, a mere .09 seconds behind the fourth place finisher from Canada's Argonaut Rowing Club while they crossed more than six seconds ahead of the race's sixth finisher, Boston University.

On the weekend of Oct. 11 and Oct. 12, UMass won a combined 16 medals between the Head of the Housatonic on Saturday, Oct. 11 and the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta on Sunday, Oct. 12. In Saturday's event, the strongest finish from the team came in the Women's Open 2x, where the duo of Krysten Menks and Emily Mann took first place in a time of 17:23 while Carly Zanatta and Allanah Rubi-Mooney took second place with a time 18:18. In Sunday's race, which took place on the Connecticut River in Hadley, Massachusetts, UMass took home a dozen medals, with medals coming in the Morning Race 4x and the Morning Race 2x, while UMass swept in the Morning 1x. Sunday's events concluded with a pair of medals in the Afternoon 4x/4x+ and the Afternoon 2x, while the Minutewomen once again swept the Afternoon's 1x event. Jim Dietz also competed in the Men's Masters 1x E-J, and took first with an adjusted time of 14:58. The Minutewomen followed up with a pair of gold medals during day two of competition. Carly Zanatta took first in the Collegiate 1x before she combined with Sam Kolovson, Emily Mann and Krysten Menks to pull in the gold during the Open 4x.
The UMass medal count on the fall season is now up to 38.
The 2014-15 Minutewomen:
The 2014-2015 Massachusetts Minutewomen rowing roster consists of four seniors, 12 juniors, 19 sophomores, and eight freshmen. They return 34 members from the 2013-2014 roster. Among the team's new members, there were five who competed at the 2014 USRowing Youth National Championships, hosted on Lake Natoma outside of Folsom, Calif., from Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15. Newcomers Katherine Armstrong, Lauren Azuela, Charlotte Bleiler, Grace Bundy and Stephanie Giovenelli all placed fifth or higher in their respective finals. The Minutewomen are coached by Jim Dietz, who is in his 21st season at the helm of the program.
