UMass Opens Season With 36-Point Win Over Army

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts women's swimming & diving team collected 12 first place finishes en route to a 168-132 win over Army in the season-opener for both teams at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool in Boyden Gym on Saturday.

Sophomore Meriza Werenski won all three of her individual events for 27 points towards the team score. The South Hadley, Mass. native swam the 100 breast in 1:06.13 - just ahead of senior teammate Katie Arnott's 1:06.32, the 500 free in 5:04.26 and the 200 individual medley in 2:07.04.

Senior Zoe Judd was also a multiple-event winner, claiming gold in the 200 free in 1:55.14 and the 100 free in 53.04. She took bronze in the 50 free in 24.65, just a half second from first.

Senior distance specialist Molly Smyth continued her dominance in the 1000 free with a first-place showing in 10:21.95. Smyth is the school record holder in the event.

Other individual winners for the Minutewomen included juniors Rebecca Quirie, in the 100 back,junior Jocelyn Yuen, in the 200 fly and Arnott in the 200 breast.

The diving corps were a strong point as expected, collecting the five highest scores on both boards. Junior Mikhaila Eckhardt was first in the 3-meter with a 260.40 total, followed by seniors Rachel Dushman at 246.23 and Rhiannon Froman at 239.92. Froman's 250.20 in the 1-meter earned top billing, with Dushman in second and sophomore Julia Jagannath in third.

The Minutewomen opened the swimming portion of the meet with a two second win in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Quirie, Arnott, Yuen and Judd touched in a time of 1:47.87.

UMass will return to action at Boston University next Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
