Hilliard Leads Women's XC At New England Championships

Results BOSTON - Senior Rachel Hilliard placed fifth out of a field of 262 runners to lead the UMass women's cross country team to an 11th place finish with 317 points out of 38 teams at the New England Championships on Saturday at Franklin Park. New Hampshire won the meet with 61 points.
Hilliard improved upon her 26th place showing at the meet a year ago, completing the 5K in 17:44.8. Her fifth-place performance marked the best individual showing by a member of the Minutewomen since 2007 when Christina Derosa took fourth out of a field of 290 (17:58).
Junior Carly Zinner was UMass' No. 2 finisher for a second straight week, posting a time of 18:37.7 to place 61st. Sophomore Deirdre Martyn finished close behind in 65th with a time of 18:39.9, while sophomore Christine Davis and Alexandra Purdue-Smithe, rounded out the Minutewomen's top-five in 86th (18:51.8) and 104th (18:57.1), respectively.
UMass will be back in action on Oct 24, when the squad will travel to New Britain, Conn., for the CCSU 3K Mini-Meet at 4 p.m.
