UMass Divers Head To NCAA Zone Meet

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be sending four divers to the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on the campus of Virginia Tech beginning on March 15.
Competition will take place over three-days and will feature the one-meter, three-meter and platform diving events. UMass will send both men's divers, Alexander Merkulov and Josh Koppel, and women's divers Michaela Butler and Mary Atkinson.
The one-meter and three-meter events will consist of a preliminary round of six dives using all five groups. The top 18 finishers from the preliminary round will advance to the final round and will perform a second list of six dives using all five groups. The men's platform will consist of a preliminary round of six dives using all six groups, while the women's platform event will consist of a preliminary round of five dives using five different groups.
This season the NCAA Zone qualifying cuts for men are 300 on the one-meter and 320 on the three-meter boards. For the women it is 265 on the one-meter and 280 on the three-meter. Eighty-six divers representing 30 schools will be attending the Zone A meet.
Last year, the University of Buffalo hosted a total of 48 men's divers from 27 schools and 10 conferences, while the women's field consisted of 47 divers from 26 schools and 11 conferences throughout the northeast region.
Butler was the lone UMass diver to travel to Zone's last season, qualifying for both the one- and three-meter finals. In the three-meter she finished 11th with a score of 253.75, while in the one-meter she finished 12th with a score of 231.00.
