PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite out-shooting Providence, 44-24, the UMass hockey team was unable to solve goaltender Jon Gillies, falling, 2-0 at Schneider Arena on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 7-11-2 overall, 4-8-1 in Hockey East, while the Friars improve to 9-8-3 on the season and 7-4-2 in conference action.

Junior Branden Gracel, sophomore Zack LaRue and junior Conor Allen each had a team-high five shots apiece, but Gillies turned aside 44 attempts in total for Providence to record his third shutout of the season.

After UMass dominated the bulk of the second period with a 21-4 shot advantage, it was the Friars who managed to break up the scoreless deadlock with the frame winding down. Derek Army and Brandon Tanev won the puck below the goal line and sent it out front for Ross Mauermann to put home at 18:13.

Providence later added an insurance goal 9:58 into the third. Tom Parisi fed Myles Harvey whose shot from the right faceoff circle was stopped by netminder Steve Mastalerz. However, Tim Schaller was there to knock in the rebound and increase the advantage to 2-0.

The Minutemen won 35 of 65 faceoffs on the night, including Gracel's 14 for 17 showing over the dots. Mastalerz finished with 22 saves and both squads went 0-for-4 on the power play in the contest.

UMass will return to action next Friday night, Jan. 18, playing at Boston College at 7 p.m.
