Providence College Next On The Docket For Tennis

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's tennis team is gearing up to host Providence College Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts. The Minutewomen are heading into the match with an overall season record of 8-7 (5-1, Atlantic 10) while the Friars are coming to Amherst with a record of 7-5 (0-2, Big East). Although the match is slated to take place in Amherst, if the weather conditions worsen this weekend the match will be moved to Providence, R.I. Saturday's match between UMass and Fairfield was already cancelled due to weather forecasts and will not be rescheduled.

Road Trippin' In S.C.

UMass is coming into Sunday's match fresh off a week-long road trip in South Carolina where the Minutewomen took on Charleston Southern, Charlotte and #60 College of Charleston. Judy Dixon's squad posted a record of 1-2 on the trip, notching a 5-2 win against Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte.

Julia Comas kicked things off for UMass with singles wins during the first two matches of the trip against Charleston Southern and Charlotte, boosting her dual match singles record to 10-5 and 16-11 overall. The junior-captain grabbed a 7-6, 6-2 victory from No. 4 singles against Charleston Southern's Marija Dzakovic and a 6-1, 6-2 win over Charlotte's Natsuko Takayanagi at No. 3 singles.

Sonia Bokhari started the three-match stretch with a tough, 6-4, 6-4 loss from No. 2 singles against Charleston Southern but was able to bounce back and close out the trip with two straight victories from the second singles slot. The Louisville transfer defeated Andrea Rivera of Charlotte, 6-2, 6-4 before topping Kelly Kambourelis of 60th ranked College of Charleston in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

Yuliana Motyl, Jessica Podlofsky and Chanel Glasper also recorded singles victories during the duration of the trip. Motyl and Podlofsky helped push UMass over the top of Charlotte with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles respectively while Glasper joined Bokhari by recording a victory against #60 Charleston Southern from No. 6 singles in straight sets.

UMass nabbed the doubles point against Charlotte as the No. 1 and No. 3 pairings of Motyl/Chantal Swiszcz and Podlofsky/Glasper garnered respective wins of 8-4 and 8-6.

Scouting the Friars

Sunday's match against the Friars was originally scheduled to be played in October but was cancelled due to rain.

Providence is coming off a 6-1 win at Sacred Heart on Mar. 24. and will host Siena on Saturday before heading to Amherst to take on the Minutewomen.

The Friars have been very strong this season at the top of their singles rotation. Their top two singles players have a combined total of 17 dual match wins and a winning percentage of 77.3%. At first singles, Marisela Aviles-Duron boasts a 10-2 dual match record (16-5 overall) while Maria Clara Bernardez holds a 7-3 record from No. 2 singles (2-0 record from No. 1 singles).

The junior Aviles-Duron hails from Honduras while the sophomore Bernardez calls the Dominican Republic her home. The duo has teamed up for a 9-3 record from first doubles this season.

Next Time Out

UMass will hit the courts again on Tuesday, April 3 in Fairfield, Conn. against Sacred Heart for a 3:00 p.m. match. The Minutewomen will then turn around for a home match against Boston University on April 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mullins Center Courts.
