AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Football Team will compete in their home opener vs. Rhode Island Saturday, September 17. A fireworks display has been scheduled after the conclusion of the game, in addition to the Minuteman Marching Band performance.
The UMass Women's Rowing Team will present the fireworks display, generously provided by Atlas Pyrovision Productions, in an effort to raise money to assist the program in its efforts to replenish boats lost due to the collapse of teams storage facility this past winter. The goal is to raise enough funds to purchase a new boat to be used for competition this spring season. Members of the 2011-2012 Team will be collecting donations throughout the game and ask that all supporters of UMass Rowing come out and take part in this great event!
Additionally, the Rowing Team will have a boat dedication for former UMass Rower Amanda Kraus, class of 1995. Kraus started an organization called Row New York in 2002 which utilizes rowing as a way to help the youth of under-resourced communities of New York City build the skills to succeed on and off the water. Kraus started her organization with one borrowed boat and eight eager rowers and now boasts 300 yearly participants. Every Row New York rower has gone on to college and many have earned rowing scholarships. The dedication will also take place at the conclusion of the UMass vs. URI game.
If you are unable to attend the game but would still like to donate to the James W. Dietz Boat Endowment, please contact Katie Wood, Associate Director of Development kcwood@admin.umass.edu or 413-545-1265 or Laura Simon, Assistant Coach, UMass Rowing at lnsimon@admin.umass.edu.
