IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa received goals from three different players and used a 27-4 shot advantage to defeat UMass, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa. Alesha Widdall made 12 saves for the Minutewomen, who return home to host their opener at Garber Field on Saturday, Sept. 10 against Harvard.
Widdall made eight of her season-high 12 saves in the first half, keeping the Minutewomen in the game, but Niki Schultheis put the Hawkeyes on the board in the 21st minute by knocking in a rebound.
Geena Lesiak made it a 2-0 game in the 27th minute when she scored on a penalty corner off a pass from Schultheis.
Kim Scraper capped off the scoring in the 48th minute when she drove in a Aubrey Coleman pass, making it 3-0.
Callie Sweigart recorded three shots for the Minutewomen.
Penalty corners were 13-5 in favor of Iowa.
Saturday's home opener at Garber Field will feature a pregame ceremony honoring the 30th anniversary of UMass' 1981 Final Four team.
