No. 4 UConn Defeats UMass Field Hockey, 4-1

STORRS, Conn. - Three first half goals built No. 4 Connecticut a lead that that could not be overcome on Wednesday night as UMass field hockey (2-7) fell to the Huskies (8-1), 4-1 at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex. Lindsay Bowman scored a second half goal for the Minutewomen, who outshot the Huskies 8-2 in the second half after the home team held a 16-1 advantage in the first half.
UMass will next head to Syracuse to face the No. 5 Orange (7-2) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Final shots were 18-9 in favor of UConn, who held a 16-1 advantage in the first 35 minutes, including a 8-1 edge in penalty corners, but the Minutewomen controlled the second half, outshooting the Huskies, 8-2, and out-cornering them, 7-2.
The Minutewomen came out strongin the second half. Bowman scored in the 47th minute off a pass from Kim Young. It was the first goal of the season for the sophomore forward who scored four as a freshman last season, one of which was the game-winner in UMass 1-0 upset victory over the Huskies.
Maria Elena Bolles was the offensive star for UConn, factoring in all three first half goals, scoring one and assisting on the two others. Ali Blankmeyer gave the Huskies the early 1-0 lead 6:51 into the game when she scored her sixth goal of the season off a Bolles assist.
Bolles scored her fifth of the season in the 14th minute, and late in the first half set up Chloe Hunnable for her eighth of the year in the 34th minute, giving the Huskies a 3-0 halftime lead.
Anne Jeute closed out the scoring in the 58th minute with an unassisted goal, her third of the year.
Alesha Widdall made nine saves in goal for UMass, while Sarah Mansfield made six stops for UConn.
