NEW ORLEANS, LA - Following the individual scholar athlete awards, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the All-Academic Teams, as the UMass men's team was on the prestigious list composed of 90 squads. Taking home the Scholar Teams of the Year were Brigham Young University for the indoor campaign and Florida State University for the outdoor season. The criteria for the award relates to each team' s overall GPA, combined with performances on the playing surface through both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Ken O'Brien's squad was one -of-three Atlantic 10 teams to be added to the list of 90, with the other two being conference foes Temple and La Salle. At the recent A-10 Outdoor Championships, UMass finished in fourth, behind Temple (third) but ahead of La Salle (11th).
This award is not the first academic recognition for the Minutemen for the 2010-11 campaign. At the top of the list have been Kevin Johnson who was renamed an Academic All-American as he was the top cross country harrier for UMass in 2010, along with being a key competitor in the 10,000 and 5,000 meter runs during the outdoor season. Of most recent, Daniel Barry was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team just last week for his outstanding performances both in the classroom and on the track this past year.
A quad of Minutemen were also tabbed Academic All-District with Daniel Wu, Sean Busch, and Kevin and David Johnson compiling the UMass foursome. It was the second time Busch and Kevin Johnson took home the academic honor, while being the first for David Johnson and Wu.
