AMHERST, Mass. - UMass senior third baseman Matt Gedman has been named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference First Team, the conference office announced this morning. Gedman finished his career with the Minutemen leading the A-10 with a .402 batting average this season, the first UMass player to do so since Justin Howard hit a league-best .394 in 1993.

Gedman played and started 45 of UMass' 47 games this spring and posted the second-highest hits total in school history for a single season, going 76-for-189 at the plate, while ranking fifth all-time in single season batting average. He paced the Minutemen with 43 runs scored and recorded 32 RBI, 11 doubles, three triples and five home runs. The lefty boasted a team-best 108 total bases, contributing to a .571 slugging percentage and logged a .440 on base percentage, as well.

In the most recent NCAA statistics report, Gedman ranked in the top-35 nationally for batting average and was among the top-40 hitters toughest to strike out, fanning only 13 times in 189 at bats in 2011.

Starting all of UMass' 24 conference games, Gedman hit .343 (35-for-102) in Atlantic 10 play with 25 runs scored, four doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI. Gedman was selected as the UMass Athlete of the Week back on Mar. 21 after helping the Minutemen to a 3-3 week at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla. Over that six-game stretch, Gedman batted .500, going 15-for-30, with four multi-hit games, eight RBI, five runs scored and three doubles.

Gedman registered a team-leading 25 multi-hit games this season, including two five-hit contests that set a career high. He was second on the squad with nine multi-RBI games and posted the program's longest hitting streak in 10 years, 18 games, which tied for third-longest in the Atlantic 10 this season.

In 142 career games over four years with UMass, Gedman hit .334 (179-for-536) with 33 doubles, four triples, 14 home runs, 94 RBI and 99 runs scored.
