Tennis Adds Five For 2011-12

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's tennis head coach Judy Dixon has announced the addition of five freshmen for the 2011-12 season. The talented and versatile group joins a squad that returns many of its top players and will sure to be a force in the Atlantic 10. The UMass Class of 2015 consists of Emilie Burgess (Mystic, Conn.), Bianca Drabek (Neuilly-sur-Seine, France), Gianna Francis (Miami, Fla.), Chanel Glasper (Sarasota, Fla.), and Hazuki Onaga (El Segundo, Calif.).

"We feel that this class will add a lot of depth and versatility to our team next year," Dixon said. Many of these players bring in different strengths and styles of play that will give us a lot of flexibility when it comes to both our singles and doubles lineups."

Emilie Burgess is from Mystic, Conn. She is rated as a 2-star recruit on tennisrecruiting.net and ranks No. 9 in Connecticut and No. 19 in New England. A good athlete with a strong baseline game, she is expected to add a lot of depth to the UMass lineup.

Bianca Drabek comes to UMass from Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, a town just outside of Paris. She has trained at the Prostejov Tennis Academy in the Czech Republic as well as at the revered Bollettieri Academy in Florida. Drabek has won several tournaments at the regional level in France and advanced to later rounds in national tournaments. She currently resides and trains in Switzerland.

Chanel Glasper


Gianna Francis is from Miami, Fla. Tennisrecruiting.net rates her as a 3-star recruit and she ranks in the top 30 in Florida and No. 350 nationally. Francis brings a strong power game with heavy strokes that will bring explosiveness and depth to Dixon's squad.

Chanel Glasper is also a Florida native, from Sarasota. She is rated a 4-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net and ranks in the top 120 nationally as well as in the top 20 in Florida, one of the strongest tennis states in the country. Glasper is an athletic player with a long frame who brings a strong all-around game. Dixon expects her to step in as a contributor in both singles and doubles immediately.

Hazuki Onaga


Hazuki Onaga is a native of El Segundo, Calif. A standout player at El Segundo High School, she played at No. 1 singles and doubles for all four years. Onaga rates as a 4-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net and has a ranked as high as No. 120 nationally and in the top 30 in California, also a top tennis state. She is athletic and very quick with a strong all-around game. She is expected to make an impact in both singles and doubles.

These five will bolster a squad that returns Yuliana Motyl (No. 1 singles & doubles in 2010-11), Julia Comas (No. 2 singles), Jessica Podlofsky (No. 4/5 singles & No. 3 doubles), and Chantal Swiszcz (No. 5/6 singles & No. 1 doubles). They will also aid in replacing the losses of Candynce Boney (No. 3 singles & No. 2 doubles), Kaitlyn Carpenter (No. 5/6 singles & No. 3 doubles), and Tanisha Hodgson (No. 2 doubles) to graduation.

UMass finished 2010-11 with a 15-9 overall record and a 6-1 mark against Atlantic 10 opponents.
