Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The UMass baseball team scored four late runs, but the output was not enough to overcome a 10-1 deficit, as the squad fell to St. Bonaventure 10-5 in the 2011 season finale on Saturday afternoon at Fred Handler Park. The Minutemen close out the year with a record of 17-29-1 overall, 8-15-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies improve to 23-23 on the year, 13-11 in the conference, and will await their A-10 Tournament fate based on tonight's Xavier-Fordham matchup.

St. Bonaventure managed to plate a run in the bottom of the first without registering a hit to take a 1-0 lead. Brad Steinbach reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Billy Urban.

The Bonnies then pushed the score to 5-0 in the bottom of the third, tallying four runs on seven hits, including a two-run homer by Jason Radwan.

UMass then got on the board in the top of the fourth as senior Matt Gedman flared a one-out single into center, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by senior Peter Copa.

However, St. Bonaventure added three more runs in its next turn at bat to increase its advantage to 8-1. Jaime Wallschlaeger led off the inning with a triple to center and Radwan followed with his second home run of the game, hit to left center. Eric Jutca later came through with an RBI single to bring in Michael Grieco for the squad's eighth run.

The Bonnies tacked on another pair in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a two-run double by Nick Brennen that brought the score to 10-1.

The Minutemen threatened to rally in the top of the eighth as the squad batted around in the frame. Gedman led off the inning with a single to right, his 76th hit of the season, which put him in a three-way tie for second on the UMass single season list with Doug Clark (1997) and Ryan Jette (1996).

Copa then ripped a double to the left field corner and junior Tom Conley drove in Gedman with a single to left. Senior Kyle Multner plated Copa with a single through the left side and sophomore Anthony Serino connected for a two-out two-run single up the middle that brought in Conley and Multner. Gedman came to the plate with the bases loaded with Copa on deck representing the tying run, but Asa Johnson induced ground ball out to end the threat.

Junior Ben Hart started for UMass and took the loss (3-3) as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with two walks and one strikeout in three innings on the hill. Eddie Gray picked up the win (6-2) for St. Bonaventure after tossing 7.1 innings. He surrendered five runs on 12 hits, walked one and struck out five.

Gedman finished his final collegiate contest, 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, while freshman Nick Sanford was a perfect 3-for-3. Copa hit 2-for-4 and Multner batted 2-for-5, each with an RBI and a run scored.

Radwan led the charge for the Bonnies, hitting 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Wallschlaeger went 3-for-3 and scored twice, while Alex Calderon and Jutca hit 3-for-4 and 3-for-5, respectively.
